Dyno results are in!!!!!!!

Made several pulls today.
Unfortunately, my stock Merc ignition wouldn't stay lit around 4000rpm under load. More than likely the '94 original coil is bad. Closed plug gap from .035 to .020, this helped some, but still missed out at 4500.

Then installed MSD distrib, wires and box.
Problem solved.

Best pull: timing at 32*
624.9hp @ 5500 (and climbing)
655.3 ft. lbs @ 4600

2nd best was: timing at 34*
621.4hp @ 5500,
646.4 ft. lbs @ 4600
however the exhaust temps where more desirable, so this will be the setting

Carb jetting was right on.
5 lbs of boost

It's going to be a good year on the water!!!!!!!!!

No spare tire for transporting my motor ;)

Audiofn 03-27-2002 11:43 PM

Man that is one sweeeeeeet looking motor!!!! :D:D

Jon

boater31 03-28-2002 12:03 AM

sounds like good numbers!! looks like you have the same blower set up i do. can you tell me what you have in the motor parts wise and what cubic inch is it?? thanks

Back4More 03-28-2002 12:47 AM

Nice!
I see you've got the right stuff in your garage...a Fountain, a drive on the rack, a blower motor on a stand, and a torpedo heater to keep them warm for the winter. :D
Can't wait to see them all together on the water.

TomFTM 03-28-2002 04:04 AM

Watch that 34 degree timing that is a little too advanced for a blower motor on pump gas..;)

BadDog 03-28-2002 05:28 AM

Jerry,
Cool! I think I know where a few 32 Fountains at lake Cumberland for ya to run are! Hope to see that beast on the water this summer. You went with MSD over the Crane?

Tim T.

Mbam 03-28-2002 07:17 AM

Did you open the plug gaps back up? The MSD likes about .045

Payton 03-28-2002 08:16 AM

US1, congrats. those are some good numbers.

BAJA WILL 03-28-2002 08:26 AM

US1 Fountain,

Nice set up, I can't wait to hear some performance #s. I am curious, did you cut a hole in you sunpad, or have some type of scoop?? Looks like that blower sits up pretty high.

Lets see 620ish HP I bet you nail 85mph or more dialed in right. What prop you going to use, Hydro 29??

tomcat 03-28-2002 12:07 PM

That sounds like great power for a marine engine. How much would an intercooler do for you? (It would give you some place to divert the extra water pressure);)

CheckmateF1 03-28-2002 01:52 PM

Congrats Jerry!!

That's about what you were expecting, right? When you had this motor setup in your Desktop dyno what head selection did you use?

I can't wait for next week. Should be putting mine on the dyno Thursday the 4th!!:D

Eric

US1 Fountain 03-28-2002 06:23 PM

Thanks guys!

tomcat,
no room for intercooler.

27Fountain,
I still have an inch or 2 clearance below the hatch. Boat has always been blown, I just "tinkered" somemore this winter with it.
Ran 83 last year with a 27" Hydro @ 5500. May try a 28 this year.

Mbam,
no, plugs still at .020

boater31,
'94 502, Crane roller, 234/242,112, .610/.632, full ported heads. Anything else, ask away.

Tim,
Hey there!
the MSD was the dynos system. We used it for a comparison to my "failed" stock system. Now I gotta decide to either go Crane, MSD, or just replace my coil and wires for new. More than likely that alone would fix it. Any word of any Ohio River fun or poker runs from Ken for this year?

B4M,
and what the pics don't show......20,000 mile '84 Vette. I think it's black, haven't peeked under the cover for last 4 years.;)

TomFTM,
Yeah, that's got me too. Goes against everthing I read/heard. Motor didn't like anything under 30* But thats what she wanted.

I would hope Bruce reads this and could explain his take on the timing issue, and for lack of better words, I am an ignition idiot.

Nice set up Jerry, glad all your hard work paid off.

US1,

What ignition module are you running ? I too have read and researched the timing issues of over 30* on a blown application.

I have a blown application too. I recently purchased the v-6 module and now I'm not sure if I'd need it.

What kind of compression are you running ?

I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Thanks,

hotbeek 03-28-2002 08:29 PM

Sounds like your set. Why not increase boost to next pulley ? How was idling characteristics ?

tripps 03-28-2002 09:12 PM

the v-6 module has less curve, makes it idle clean tripps

US1 Fountain 03-28-2002 09:26 PM

hotbeek

Motor has always been run with the V-6 module and timing set at 28* at 3000 since '95. I prefer to stay at 5 lbs max just for reliability. We never really idled it lower than 1200, so can't say. Since my ignition was bad, going for a comparison between it and MSD didn't happen. I will say that I never noticed any problem last year with it at 28*. On the dyno it would miss out terribly as soon as hit with the load. Also didn't miss out last year either. The motor is originally 8.75 CR and nothing was done to change it. Motor is not built as a "blower" motor, but more of a "bolt-on" blower. Also why staying at 5 lbs max. Fast and HP is cool, but turn key takes priority. The lower the timing was, the higher the exhaust temps went.

On one hand I got an actual running motor on a real time dyno showing more timing.
On the other hand, I got books, blower owners manual and people saying less timing.

I think I got 1 too many hands. ;)

Lets try this.......who's running non intercooled blowers on Prem pump gas with more than 30 deg. of timing?

Jerry

boater31 03-28-2002 10:11 PM

can you give me the part# on the cam you are using so i can compare it to mine? are you using the stock heads? what size carb and what did you jet at? i am running 496" (454 bored and stroked) merlin heads and nickerson 1280 carb. what kind oh hp and torque were you seeing at 5000? i just built mine and have only turned up to 5000 at 3lbs boost. thanks...Russ

Liquid Kroozir 03-28-2002 10:14 PM

I have run mine for 3 seasons now at 32* total timing 5lbs boost. This was an HP500 I basicly removed carb and bolted on blower. No internal mods at all.

The cam is Crane 139741

Heads are the rec. port ones. Full port job, titanium retainers, comp springs.

Carb is a boost referenced 1050 Dom. The blower/ carb is originally a Nickerson package. Carb was way to rich to make boat dependable. Bruce referenced it, completely redid it with new venturies, air bleeds, and metering blocks and bench flowed set up last year for me. I have no idea what jets are in it. It's perfect, I don't touch it.

It was flowing 1067 scfm @5500rpm

With 5 lbs boost@ 5000rpm: 599hp, 629 ft lbs torque

boater31 03-28-2002 11:08 PM

thanks for the input. i plan on going to the dyno next week so i will let you know of my results.

hotbeek 03-28-2002 11:19 PM

I've got my engine at 32*. That's with a v-8 module that has 24* built in. So what kind of base timing do you have ? My v-6 module has 14* built in. If you had the same module you'd have like 18-20* base ?? I was told that would be a tough starting motor when it warmed ???

hotbeek 03-28-2002 11:20 PM

I'm running 8:1 comp. with 7lbs. boost.

voodoo 03-29-2002 12:16 PM

EGT's can be decieving! With the timing further retarded the fuel may still be burning some as it starts to exit. With the timing advanced the fuel has had more time to burn and thus all that is coming out is gas. Your engine likes the lower timing, you may even like 30 degrees better, I would have tried it. Don't think you can defeat the laws of physics. If you get a batch of bad gas and stay in it too long with alot of timing it will melt.
