Info on older tall deck race engine by Kieth Hazell "Profile"

Seeing as I had a bad run of luck with my last couple engine adventures
my cousin sent me an engine that had been sitting around the warehouse
for about ten years, it was a running but tired pull from a factory raceboat from the
late 80s.
Its a tall deck .030 over stroker (489?) with carillo rods and the crank
has "Hank the crank" and "mercury marine" stamped on it along with a ton
of information as far as balances and bearing sizes. yes all written on teh crank itself.
The assembly is balanced and apparently lightened as well. All bearings while worn
are in nice shape as are the bores.
The cam is a flat tappet Crane HIT-292-2-NC 13 39 88
Seems like typical for the day, lots of duration, not much lift 110 overlap.
heads are ported on both intake and exhaust but need to be redone so
Ill use my HP500 heads.
Huge freakin oilpan with kickouts on both sides and a complicated looking windage tray.
Valve covers look like the old merc 420 covers but with "Profile" name with a red number "1"
behind the name.
My thoughts are new bearings, new gaskets,Comp extreme marine cam with simiar specs (544/547 270/286 112 overlap) to a Merc 420 camshaft and slap my hp 500 heads on it and call it a day.
I can put it back together
for under a grand and be back and running . Ill have to pay my cousin back one day for the engine though.
I do have a broken 454 and 502 to sell to help with that.
Anyways thoughts? Anyone heard of Profile?

Never have heard of profile making engines but they did have some decent boats back in the day. Keep the big pan, never hurts, def run a roller cam..

ya know.... you have an assembly that someone did a great job on, ran its service hours and came out in perfect shape. if i were you, i would really consider doing nothing more than rings, bearings ( same mfg, same numbers, same clearences ) and a fresh valve job on the same heads. why screw with a combination that worked so well ? how bad could it have been ?

HTRDLNCN 06-15-2009 12:19 PM

thats what I am doing as far as bearings , I am getting the same exact ones.,
only reason I am using my HP500
heads is because the ones on the motor have some salt water
erosion and mine were just redone.
As for cam , it wont work with my manifolds, way too much duration. They were most probably running a dry race exhaust.
