Alternator Upgrade

Changing from a 4-wire Motorola Alternator to a 1-wire Delco-Remy Alternator. The local Mechanic said all I have to do is hook up the pos wire and eliminate the other three. Does this sound right??

Should be fine. Insulate the remaining wires so they dont short. May be a good idea to ground the original ground wire.

it depends where your other wires go to. some alternators have a wire that goes directly to the coil, if that is the case you won't run. it will start from the 12 volts from the switch but die as soon as your out of the start position. Fran

i did that last year while i had my merc alt rebuilt. it worked fine for me.

Exa eagle I have not seen that problem before as that wire can not stay hot all the time? If it did how would the engine shut off? Interesting.

Anyhow you should put the ground wire to the alternator there will be a post for it. The other wires wrap up well with tape and tape them back in case you swap back again. If you have any questions just ask :D:D

Thanks for the help!

HighMaint..........The red wire should go to the starter solenoid. Also, if you do increase the amperage on the alternator, make sure that the wires and connectors are in good shape.

on that particular setup, you turn the key off and it grounded the coil to kill the ignition. the 12 volts to start was from the battery via the start position on the key, the voltage to run came from the alternator.

Cool thanks for the explain. I have not run into that set up yet.
