Gettin' a little smokey
 

Hey guys, i just picked up a 2001 29' kryptonite. It had an hp500 with an MS1C procharger, which i have just had East Coast Marine take off. Now, the engine is running fine, but when i slow down for 5mph areas the smoke is almost unbearable! Its a thicker smoke, and at least double what it looks like when i start it up cold at the ramp. It has a custom blow through nickerson carb that East Coast Marine re jetted.

All and any help is greatly appreciated!

Electric choke?

this is my first IO. I couldn't tell ya. How can i solve this? rev it up in neutral after a run to clear it out?

No, no.

Taking the spark arrestor off and taking a peek down there would be my first guess.

If the choke is electric, it's actuated by a 12V ignition source. Usually when you are smoking there is an extremely rich condition going on. This is the reason I asked what type of choke you have.


When you start it cold, how much smoke are we talking? A few seconds worth, then clears up? More?

Yes, a few seconds at most. After running, its gets extremly heavy-- barley thin enough to see through

What color is the smoke? And does it smell like oil, or running rich type?

Just so I understand, it smokes for a second when you fire it up... then clears out, the motor runs fine. Then after running it hard and slowing down to idle speeds it smokes really heavily? Does it eventually stop or atleast thin out after a few seconds?

I doubt the choke has anything to do with it. If it did, the motor would stumble and have a hard time staying running at an idle with the choke sticking. It would be dumping too much fuel and eventaully die out.

Check the oil level. If this is the boat I think it is, the guy you got it from took VERY good care of it, so I doubt there is anything mechanically wrong.

Also keep in mind, there are more to blow-through type carbs then simply rejetting them. Maybe call Nickerson and get his recommendation on what to do with the carb settings for a naturally aspirated motor.

Its a light smoke. When i fire it up cold, theres no smoke. After about a minute it starts up and looks normal. After running though, its about twice the amount as it was 2 minutes after the cold start. Its leaving the entire back of my boat COMPETLEY black after im done. I tried using magic eraser to take it off but nothing seems to be working. Whats the trick??

it sure sounds like a carb problem,if you are not good with carbs, take it to someone who is and have them check it out.it could be the chokes,but i suspect not.have someone check the fuelpressure,and the needel&seat valves,also check the float level.don,t continue to run it until it is corrected,this can wash the rings out,then the money starts to pour out of your wallet.let us know what you find.

Took off the Pro Charger and still trying to use the same carb without rejetting or adjusting it? Try switching the carb to a smaller CFM. I agree that continued use of that one in it's current adjustments is going to cost you a coomplete engine real soon. Take a sniff of your oil now and make sure it's not already thinned down with fuel. As for the soot. Usually it will come off with a petrolium based cleaned. Try some WD40 and see if that cuts it down or diesel fuel then Simple green straight from the bottle. Thats what we use on the Fireboat . The side exhaust makes quite a black mess of the hull. Still needs some elbow greese.

The carb was rejetted and the float was changed, twice. The smoke was not bad my last ride out and it seems to run quite nice. I heard a click near the flame arrestor one time.
