Maybe a stainless cushioned stainless loop clamp to mount cooler? Would isolate it way better from vibration. Sounds like almost all failures were caused by fatigue.

The one that comes with the 330's is a complete joke. It is about the size of a beer can. After I beefed up the engine I began having engine probles due to oiling. I then purchaced a EMI Oil/PS combo cooler. I think the Mags and Blue motors are a little better but the aftermarket world has much more to offer.

had my engine hooked up to the cpmputer the other day,,,,80degree day,,and the air temp sensor reading was 111 degrees, that was at the dock with engine hatch open 496 h.o.

Have you ever had issues with pumps burning up or fluid foaming? I ran mine a whole day hard with cooler bypassed with no issues,I think this lightweight flimsy cooler is more of a liability/leak waiting to happen then anything. Smitty
Nope, never any issues at all. I've put about 150hrs on it this way and pretty sure its been like this for about 400hrs. |

we have had p/s pumps come to us burned up do to no coolers. when we checked the engine bay temp it was well over 500 f under the hatch. remember that the oil in the ram lines does not return to the tank, it stays in the rams and hoses so very little oil does all of the work in the system. the system only needs a cooler if you have more oil flow than work (ie steering).the oil gets hotter when running straight , than when steering.this is caused by the pump running up to pressure and not doing any work with the oil that it is pumping.most coolers for power steering are to big just to cool the engine compartment.remember that p/s oil does not like to be hotter than 140f . you should be able to touch any component of the system and not get burned or (ouch test). if you can not do this you need a cooler.

I've put on almost 350 hrs without a cooler now since I've owned it and still never a hiccup.

For others here whom might call this practice unsafe, please post what you are using for ps oil. BTW, I like it! Good to see I'm not crazy lol. |
I'm not in the league of most - an owner of a high performance boat - But I do have a power steering cooler on my stock 7.4 mpi. I agree that this maybe overkill especially regarding temperature. Does anyone have an opinion regarding keeping the fluid cooler to avoid foaming??-- Not thermal breakdown?
I'm in total agreement that an engine compartment can get warm but no way close to 500F-- that would be like a broiler on a stove -- and most of the plastic stuffs would melt or severely deform. Just a question/thought 3pointstar |
