stereo speakers

Can anyone suggest a good middle of the road marine speakers.? Wanting to upgrade my Pioneer speakers to something better. Currently run 4, 8" coaxials and 2, 6 1/2". One 8" Bazooka tube under couch.
Heard there were better speakers than these for not much more money and would sound better. Run 2 amps 500watts each and cross-over. Has anyone heard of DC Gold speakers?
Thanks

Griff 07-08-2009 12:16 PM

DC GOLD speakers are excellent. I'm running 4 7's and 2 6x9's, and I have 2 more 7's that I still have to install. I also run 2 Alpine Marine subs. The cheapest place to buy DC Gold's is through http://www.lafayetteradio.com/

You can't beat the 3 year warranty and they are waterproof.

team Tickfaw 07-08-2009 02:11 PM

Thanks, I will check into that. Kind of liked the sizes of them. Wanted to add a couple more but have to keep size down to
6 inches dia. They make some that are 4 inches.
I will check into it.

GO4BROKE 07-08-2009 03:18 PM

My boat has Bazooka 6" speakers. Mid level sound quality, and very loud. I was surprised I liked them. I'm going to put some in the car. They are pretty cheap.

GO4BROKE 07-08-2009 03:24 PM

That Laffyette Radio has great prices. The Bazookas are a lot cheaper than the DC's, with 1/3 the warranty. They are good enough to satisify me outdoors where sound quality is difficult. I may try the DC's in the car.

My buddy just installed Polk db's in his boat, and they sound great! Pretty inexpensive too. I'm thinking of putting the same in my boat.

jmeng 07-08-2009 03:44 PM

I've had good luck with the Polks also. Can usually catch them for sale at Crutchfield.

team Tickfaw 07-08-2009 03:53 PM

After looking at the DC golds the sizes of them are not standard. I think I may have problem with replacing the 6 1/2 and 8" presently in boat.
I too have looked at the Bazooka's and have noticed several boats in my area that have them.
Do any of you think they wood sound better than the Pioneer TS-MR163 6 1/2" and TSMR2040 8" I presently have?? These are 200 watt max speakers.
Thanks guys

what is the cutout size of the dc golds? you may just have to enlargen the holes a little bit.

hp500efi 07-08-2009 06:14 PM

Have Polk as home speakers, polks as boat speakers and Polk in one of the trucks....always a great speaker and their warranty is excellent. Just buy from a reputable source such as Crutchfield

Cold Sweat 07-08-2009 08:42 PM

I put Polk speakers in my Fountain, great upgrade and sound really good. Getting ready to buy 3 sets for my Formula. Polk makes a very nice speaker for the money.
I also have a pair of Polk SDA's I've had at home for 20 years, old school, but love em. They're huge, they each have 8-6" mid drivers, 4 dome tweeters, and 12" base.
I'm also looking at Polk's 5 channel amp but have no experience with them...mmm

JRider 07-08-2009 09:28 PM

Polks!!!

Polks are great sounding and are actually marine speakers. they have plastic molded grilles. Avoid anything with mesh steel grills or any that are not thru screwed!

Cut out size for the 7's is about 6.25"
http://www.dcgoldaudio.com/1837827.html

If your current 8" holes are too big, you could just get some 1/4" plates made to put behind them.

You may also want to check out Diamond Audio. They make great speakers as well.

team Tickfaw 07-09-2009 01:30 PM

Thanks for all the advice!!! DC's are a bit more than want to spend and the odd sizes worry me on fitment. Polks are a little more in my price range and standard sizes.
Bazooka's have an attractive price and I see several boats with them but price is about the same as the Pioneer's I have now and don't know if they would indeed be a "upgrade".
What do you think??

team Tickfaw 07-09-2009 01:32 PM

Oh... by the way Griff thanks for the info and I have the shifters mounted and been running. They work fine.
Thanks

Great doing business with you.

FWIW, I just added 4 component speakers (woofer with seperate tweeters and crossovers) in the cockpit and they are very nice; Kicker KM625.2 6” They are marine speakers, too. $152.97 per pair from Amazon.com (they are an authorized dealer and I have Amazon Prime). It's only the beginning of my system, but a nice beginning without too much expense.

O.K. This is what I done today. Went looking for some Polks, did not find anything in stock so I wound up with Memphis Marine. I purchased a pair of 8" and a pair of 6 1/2". They both are component speakers with seperate tweeters but tweeters are mounted in the speaker on a swivel base. You can angle the tweeter where you want. They come with the cross overs also. Reasonably priced I thought at 139 for the 6 1/2" and 159 for the 8". If they sound better than the Pioneer's I will swap them all. Let y'all know something Monday. Thaks all for the help.

I'm a little late, but for future reference, www.wetsounds.com. I'm a dealer for them and have sold many sets of the XS-650's to powerboat owners locally. The coax's are very loud, and clean as a whistle. You have to hear them to believe it.

team Tickfaw 07-15-2009 07:26 PM

UPDATE... So I started this by just buying a few speakers to upgrade the sound. As any good boater I went alittle further.
Removed my four 8" Pioneer's and two -6 1/2" Pioneers and replaced them with Memphis Marine true co-axial speakers (cross over on each speaker) with 1" swivel tweeters. Sounded great. Alot of difference without changing anything. Had stereo shop build spacers/adapters for the Memphis speakers to fit in the Pioneer hole cutouts. (Pioneers 1/4" larger cutout).
Needed to change Sony dash remote also (130.00) so the wife says just just put some money with it and get that cool Kenwood KMR 700U reciever that is waterproof and face drops down to reveal a "glove box" that has a USB port and a I-Pod port inside. Plug in, close faceplate and reciever reads and displays everything on the radio and protects the USB/I Pod. Large screen with 4 rows charactors. Bluetooth, I-tunes etc. The brains of reciever is in another box which is mounted somewhere else in boat. Lots of features, very cool setup. I get rid of CD changer, huge 3" dia Sony remote, use Kenwood marine remote which can be flush mounted and looks nice. You can add up to 3 remotes.
Added 1 10" Kenwood marine sub that comes as a package with it's own amp. This thing rocks alot better now.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Look into this setup.

NEVERSATISFIED 07-15-2009 07:58 PM

I installed (2) 10", (4) 8" & (4) 6 1/2" Memphis Marine speakers last year VERY HAPPY with the results.

ive had really good luck with polks in my boat

team Tickfaw 07-16-2009 02:52 PM

I am assuming the 2 10" are subs. You run 3 amps for all that?

You could easily run 2 amps for that. One Mono amp for the subs and a decent powered 4 channel @ 2 ohms for the 8 speakers.

Has anyone heard the JL Audio Marine speakers? there are a couple of boats around here that really sound good , sound quality was amazing to me . been thinkin about buying some of those .

jonyb 07-20-2009 07:25 PM

They're very pricey......

Seriously, checkout the Wet Sounds stuff. The XS-650 that they make is louder and cleaner than the JL's.

Wet Sounds does make some nice speakers. They're big down here in Texas and you see them all over the wakeboard boats. Wet Sounds puts on a stereo competition each year at one of our poker runs and some of their boats are crazy sounding!

dookie 07-20-2009 10:30 PM

I knew the JLs sounded great in both of the boats that i heard them in , but when i read this whole post i was very suprised that i didnt see them mentioned . So i was kind of leary mentioning them thinking i would have to put the flame suit on. But then went and checked on the pricing of them , and was like damn these things are pricey..... .
I will say this , One of the boats that i heard was just this weekend at the island we tied up at , and i walked over and was like wow what is that guy running and how many speakers , to my suprise it was just two of the 6.5 " and one small amp. It was crystal clear....

jonyb 07-21-2009 08:09 AM

Yeah, the JL's come stock on Mastercraft's now, and they do sound good......

I have Memphis as well that I just bought, (2) 8" 2 way's, (2) 6x9's and a single 10" sub running off a JL 4 channel (300/4) amp. I'm very pleased with the sound quality and the punch of it. Doesn't go real low, but it is PERFECT for the rock I listen to. Pricing is pretty reasonable for a reliable brand name.
