Engine cuts out when i put it into gear
 

Hey Fellas, Back again fr some more advice..:-)

I guess the engine has been in for a month now, and the first three weeks starting in the yard every 4-5 days, the engine had a very clean response when i hit the throttles..

Finally this week since i was going to go for the first run on the water, i started it and it sounded like it was either too rich or not getting enough gas, the sound was not as crisp as before and even if it clear it would still do the same thing.

i changed the plugs and it still did the same thing. i went for the first run last friday, and the boat starts fine idles fine, but when i engaged it either in forward or reverse, it lost rpms quickly and would cut out. i really had to play with the throttles and almost time engaging the gear stick for it to not cut out which it done 9 out of 10 times, but when i was successful the boat cleared it self was was able to get on plane and run fine, but the minute i stopped and went to neutral and re shifted it would do the same thing. i've changed the plugs, checked the fuel filter for debris, fuel pressure guage says 6lbs of pressure..engine idles at about 800rpms

any ideas why this is happening, it idles fine but once u take the throttles from 2000rpms upwards, it stumbles and loses rpms, like it's going to cut out and then it catches itself and the rpms will rise..

and suggestions,

could it be my timing, or the the fuel filter was after the fuel pump, which i have now reversed..

It could be your shift interlock on the LH side of your engine (mounted on the LH riser). If the shift cable is too stiff, the interlock will cut out the engine briefly to allow the drive to shift. If the shift stiffness is not resolved by cutting the ignition briefly, then the engine will most likely cutoff. Check your shift cable and drive linkage.

One way to check is to see if the cable is stiff is by watching the shift yoke on the engine while someone shifts it into forward gear. If the yoke is constantly pressing on the interrupt switch, then your shift cable is stiff (for some reason).

I agree. However be sure and check your float levels, air screws and timing also. How does it act at the dock in neutral? Sometimes or most often boats/engines will respond differently when on a trailer due to the angle. You probably knew this however I thought I would throw it at you any way.

It shifts very easy when it's on the trailer, but when it's under load in the water, the rpms drop quickly.. and the shifter moves pretty easy forward and back as well, it was idling fine on the trailer and water, but i'm now having someone set the timing hopefully tomorrow to see where we r at..

when i first installed the motor is responded great when i hit the throttles, but this last week it's been stumbing when i give it gas on the trailer, but thanks for the input..

judging by the pics i cant imagine an alpha drive behind that motor if you have a bravo or trs outdrive dont bother looking for the interupt switch because they dont use them your problem is elsewhere

I would check your mixture screws. Sounds to me that it is too lean and stumbles when it goes into gear. Back them out a 1/4 turn and try that. That is assuming your timing is set right an dyour plugs arent fouled out, which they shouldnt be since you just changed them.

Take the bowls off the carb and clean them out . Only takes a little water in a holley to make for a really bad day.

Finally got the boat running decent..Now what can i do to make it idle while in gear under low rpm..Need to get it to be a bit dock friendly..lol
would not idle for long around 1000 rpms

what was the stalling issue ?
