496 8.1 Cam Shaft.
 

I'm beginning to look for a replacement cam for my 496. I see Comp Cams, Raylar and Crane all make a cam for this motor. Does anyone know what the largest cam you can use with the stock pistons is.. The HP3 cam would be nice but you need to replace the pistons along with most of the valve train. I'm looking to get somewhere around 500 hp out of the motor with porting, cam, ect. FYI, the complete Raylar package is out of my budget. Any input would be great.

RAYLAR is the place to go for 496 parts. They have all sorts of upgrades (up to 600hp). I'm sure he has what you need.

If you can't afford a Raylar package, then I would leave it alone. What happens when you put an unproven package together and burn a hole in a piston????

I would highly recomend talking to raylar! I have put together two 496s one in boat and one in pickup. both projects done on a buget and worked very well!! It does cost money to do things right short cuts will cost u more in long run been there done that. Good luck have fun!
