are heads really worth it?

i have a 540 bulldog . thinking of putting dart pro1 heads cnc ported are they worth it.

Cylinder heads and a matched cam are what make the power in an engine... of course the other things like manifold and induction will make a little difference too. But the main power builder is the heads and cam.

Every situation is different, but adding better heads and cam can add anywhere from 50-150hp depending on a lot of different factors... hell maybe more???

Just adding the heads alone? Again each motor is so radically different, but my guess would be a 10-75hp addition.

heads

I would be changing from merlin heads to dartpro1 cnc ported heads . i already have dart intake and dominator carb.

Keep the MERLIN !!!!!!!!! They are a real good head,,maybe get them flowed and ported. To gain a little more.

Before you buy, talk to Jim Valako (OSO JimV). He can out preform the Dart CNC program. He will use the Dart Pro 1 intake and then do his own port work. Significant improvement...especially on the exhaust ports. It is worth a phone call.

Big difference in power with 540s. It will cost you however. I put mine on the dyno with Dart Pro One aluminum heads and then after Jim V did his magic. Just in his porting, same head I picked up considerable hp.

What is considerable power, just out of curiosity?

Give JimV a call, he can work his magic with those Merlins also. If your not going for just the weight savings of aluminum, it might be cost effective to have Jim work your Merlins. I am running his "Wedged" Merlin heads on my 468's and they make great power. It is worth the call just to talk to him.

JimV wedged Merlin compared to a non-wedged Merlin

Not for me freak of nature....:lolhit:

I am just curious since he dyno'd a before and after port job without changing anything else.
