Do I need the whole assembly if my boat already has 280. Or can i just swap out the tabs them selves

That's right! Don't need anything other than the overpriced 380 plates.

Give it a shot, I'm sure the plate part wouldn't be that difficult to fabricate. However you may not be much ahead money-wise after you buy materials and the amount of time you spend fabricating them. Depending on how much you value your time of course...

I can get the parts at almost no cost what so ever. A friend of mine is a Fabrication teacher at a Voc school so they pretty much pay for it all i do is drop of measurements and the do it for me. ANd if they cant i have a tig at my shop and all fab tools to do it with him getting the material for me.
thanks

Interested in your 280's when you get them swapped out. Thanks!

If you do buy them, just make sure you get the correct ones. The newer style use a larger pin. The pivot pin has a plastic sleeve on it. The older ones had a smaller pin hole since there is no sleeve on the pin.
