Default Baja 250 sport unstable ?

Ok question does anyone have any experience with Baja 250 sport??.

A Baja 250 sport with a custom 540 motor.
What speeds can this boat actually handle?
Are these models prone to chine walk around 62mph?
It seems to level out and ride better once 70 is hit.

These baja 250 hulls seem a bit unstable?
Any thoughts or tips on performance handling improvements.
Position of trib tabs at higher speeds?

Thanks and Godbless

I've spent a lot of time in a 250, we put in a procharged 800 hp motor and took it from 62 to 90 mph. It was rock steady up to 80 from 85 on up it was a real handful! But a lot of fun

if your trim tabs have a little negitive up slope to them, you may try to drop the tabs a little, it should help get it stabilized.

Well thanks dropping the tabs to about an inch down to make level made alot of difference.

I am considering installing hydraulic steering (1 ram) to help it more at the higher speeds!

I also have several people telling me that hydraulic steering is really needed.Depending on the difficulty to install the rams and rig properly i might take it to lake of the ozarks to have rams installed, if i dont do it myself.

I would be interested in hearing about any performance mods you did to your Baja 250 sport???

I am running a 540 built by Ateco Engine and Dyno its been a good motor and puts out the power!

I have a 1990 w/1078 procharged 572, Install hyd steering ASAP, Dual ram full hyd. Brian Alfre (sp?) sells nice system, affordable.
I have made the conclusion trying to take a boat designed for 55 to 60 close to 100 (96gps) is crazy. I tried for years to make it handle before I went to a cat.... BTW I have a set of Martini tabs that should just bolt in place of your Bennett tabs. Also do a search in the BAJA section for chine walk.

Sounds like a cat was a wise choice for you!

Thanks for the info.
What is the advantage of the martini tabs over the Bennett tabs? Are they longer or angled different?

the longer the tabs, the more stable it will be at high speeds, but all boats have there limits, and finding that limit can be deadly. but dual external steering is a must at those speeds, it would be wise to get the steering upgraded before the tabs, because after you put the tabs on you won't be able to help your self but to go for a test run.

Thank you gentlemen for all your information.
I will look into the steering kit.

How much horse power will it take from my motor to to push the full hydro system?
Another question is rigging?
How long does it take to install the full 2 ram kit?

Hopefully it will solve the problem, you have a valid point Kirk the front end tends to seek left and right at the higher speeds.
All the gimbals steering housing was replaced when i refurbished the boat in 2007.

Kirk, Bills wife recommended you for the steering system.
Ill be in touch. She forwarded my email to you.

Thanks and Godbless
