"HELP" ASAP (twin eng. center line/headers)

I really need help quick in regards to my limits on exhaust / headers for my 32' boat. The engines-drives center to center measurement is 33". Will std. CMI etops work? Also wondering about gils? Any ideas on either choice. The original set up had the old cast Merc. log style manifolds.

I have to move ASAP on this.

Thanks for your help.

John

I just replaced my gils with Lightning's and I had 34" and had about 2" clearance between manifolds. I don't know about the CMI's, but my Lightnings had to be custom made as he considered them "tight".

thanks for the quick response. kind of thought that might be the case. those lightenings are great. i had those in my super v-28' challenger. they made noise you dream about. i would at least think the gils would work sinse they are so close to factory manifolds.

any other input would be great.

thanks,
john

33" is tight. No issue will Gills, but you might have problem with CMI E-tops...33.5" min sticks in my mind as we moved our engines out to a 34" CL. It is worth a call to CMI to confirm.

33" is pretty tight. I dont think the CMI's will fit. Maybe CMI can provide you with a minimum centerline measurement? I would give them a call. Their engineers should know something like that.

Great minds think alike,LOL

Save you a call. The E-top CL is 32 5/8" and Sport Tubes are 33 3/4. Today our CL is 34.5" and the CMI Sport Tubes are close.
I change my first post from "might have a problem" to NFW. It is possible that CMI could custom make a set...but you won't like the cost.

I hope your right on this because I just bought 2 sets (CMI E-tops) of the older style flat flange. No backing out know. If they don't fit I'll have two sets up for sale.

Thanks guys for all your help.

Hope it works out.

Getrdunn,
I just got in from the dyno and got your email. I have only installed E-tops down to 34". I really don't think that they will fit on 33" centers. I hope I'm wrong.....good luck. If it works, it's gonna be tight. The problem will come in with the tailpipe clamps. You won't have any room to get them off or on.

i'll keep you posted. any good number to get a hold of cmi to confirm. seems like i was on there site the other day and don't recall seeing a tech number or any number at that.
thanks for your help.

I had e-tops on mine, 32 1/2" centers.... you had to jockey them into position but they worked and were very tight...

I'm running Stainless Marine Gen II's with custom 4 1/2" tails now. The Gen III's unfortunately wouldn't fit, even after the flanges being machined.

Hardin will also build you a set to fit.

thanks for your response. seems as though they might be a tight fit but should work. i guess i'll find out soon. after reading young perf. thread i am a little leary about the collecter area. was the collecter area a problem for you? looks like if i'm lucky i'll have maybe at most 3/16 to 1/4 inch max between the tuubes. know i am concerned in regards to the flange though. any info. on this would be great.
thanks for your help.

I'm probably not the right person to ask my opinion on stainless steel headers, my headers had to be fixed every other season.

I highly recommend installing a drain tube so when you shut down the engines it automacitally drains them down. All it takes is a little 1/8" hose.
