CMI E top. one warmer than other ?
Ok ! Just installed a pair of CMI e Top. they were used and tested 80 psi 2 hours.
Sound great. Noticed the left (facing motor) Header was much warmer that the right. The right header was very cool. Engine fires right up and idles good. oil pressure good. was wondering if the internal flapper is creating an issue ? Seems that there is more water coming out of the cooler exhaust. I did notice a leak at the warrm header tail pipe. water dripping slightly. that was the tail pipe I replaced the new rope seal. I'll get that tweaked Saturday to stop that from leaking. But was wondering why one side would run warmer ? Thanks gang ! BTW..... The engine is a 454. 430 hp. Cheers ! Frankie B |
Sounds like you may have a water volume flow issue that is needing to be balanced from side to side. If so you need to devise a way to distribute the water more evenly from side to side. ;) Jamie / Lakeside

Evenly distribute the water from Side to side ? I don't think I understand. Please advise.
I was thinking that maybe the internal flapper in the exhaust tip wasn't opeing as far as it should ? The bottom half of the left Header is cool the Riser portion is what's getting hot to the touch. |
I doubt it is the flapper in the tip causing the problem. I have run into this before on units with aftermarket exhausts. Sometimes eventhough the flow at or off idle seems the same or similar, under loads or higher rpm it can change. Water follows the path of least resistance..
To answer your other question, By distribution, I mean making sure that both headers get about the same ammount of water flow thru them or restricting one side slightly to force more cooling to the hotter side. :) If you are not able to do this yourself, I suggest taking it to a shop that can. Talking about water lines:
On merc racing motors, the hole going from the header to the collector... on the collector side... is slightly smaller on the starbord side collector, in order to equalize water flow to both headers. This increases water flow to the port side header. Hope this helps, Chris |

Jamie, NE Pa is a stretch for me brother. Tell me how you would correct the problem and I'll try and tackle it and give you an update when I accomplish the task. I've replaced the oil cooler, High volume Edelbrock water pump, New sea pump, New Thermostat. Would you curtail water flow from the Thermostat housing ? I would like to note. I did replace the Header's rubber distribution tube on the side that is running warmer. the reason I mention this is because the distribution tube on the warm side (the side with less water flow) has a longer distribution tube than the cooler side. Should I trim Up the distribution tube to match the length coming off the header on the cool side ? Send me your thoughts on this and your expertise on how to correct the uneven flow distribution.
