Wanting a 540 suggestions???

I have a 1995 454mag efi/bravo1 with 110hrs on it. I am wanting to swap it out for a 540 or comparable around 600hp. How much of a pain is it to use my efi setup, if so is carb the way to go? Also,is it possible to find someone to take my engine/drive setup in on trade? I know that this setup is expensive but I do not know what it would cost me to trade in my current setup.

I second Bill at Ateco. They are located in Waukegon, IL. You can find their adds in the classified section.

Is there someplace I can just trade in my drive/motor? or is that just throwing money away?

is there a better place to post this on this forum?

ok ill answer for you, either sell what you have then build a 540 or save your engine for when you sell your boat you can pull out the 540 and put the 454 back in and put your 540 in your new boat or sell it to recoop some of your cost..either way your going to nees some of the assories...

if your going to build a 540 you will need to upgrade the efi plenum because it wont flo the numbers of cfm the 540 will require..if you want to keep it efi a 500efi set up will work but you will need to reprograhm the mefi pcm or if you dont want to spend all that cash them a nice intake and carb from c&s spetialties would probably be the way to go..

I like the idea of still having efi. Is the merc500 intake is the best thing to use, just swap out injectors and run
?

your stock injectors wont flow enough fuel for a 540..theirs other efi intakes out their you can use, with a ported 500 efi intake their only good for a little over 600 hp N/A,if you run a blower/procharger you can get more out of them..most people eliminate the stock merc fuel pump system and run either a aeromotive fuel pump or sx performance fuel pump low in the hull below the fuel tank then run a return line back to the tank.

theirs many ways to go efi but sorry,,what you have just wont be enough for a 540ci motor..look for a good used 500 efi engine then go from their, a 525 is a whole differand set up and the intake is a round port set up and the wireing to make that engine work in your boat will have to be changes, adaptors bla bla bla so stick wit the 500 efi set up,its plug and play..

if it were me,take what you have and go through it,make a 489 out of what you have with your efi set up put bigger injectors on the fuel rails and install a procharger on it..then call eddie young at young performance and have him tune it,you should get 600hp with no issues at all.

The 500efi setup is great just because of the ease of setup, but it will only support 600hp. Is there another efi intake that would leave a little more room to grow, and what parts has to be changed to use it?

My 557 with its 1050 Dominator runs flawlessly. Properly set up 1050 Dominator on a 540 will perform just fine. Plus will be allot easier to get the job done. Unless you know/have a really good efi guru who is close and willing to work with you, I think efi will be a PIA. Just my .02
