Gel-coat Repair
HELP!
I am trying to re finish my 1990 switzer. The finish is very chaulky and yellowed. I have been told to wet sand it with a palm sander and some 600 grit wet and dry. This seems to very corse paper. The hull also has some blisters in the gelcoat that are very hard (they can not be pushed in with a screw driver .) and are only below the water line. Can they be sanded off or are they better left alone because they have not cracked open yet. |
I guess it depends on how much you want to buff and how rough the finish is. you can get da finish paper in 1000,1200 and 1500 grit paper, dry sand and buff. I think you will need to address the blisters because they will only get worse and cause more damage.

paint shops have a liquid compound used for blending paint after touch ups that is pretty aggressive as opposed to sandpaper. the blisters should be fixed but if you trailer your boat it's not as critical right away.
