block choices

so i blew up my gen V 502 and the block is no good, so i have a choice of buying a 502 block or getting a gen V 454 for free then stroking it to a 496. What kind a HP and torque difference would i see between a 502 and 454 stroked to 496. Also i have a side mount whipple so i cant go to big on the cubic inchs, so ive been told. Thanks

you would have more torque with the 4.250 and the 454 block..with the rite compo that we do, we are getting a little over 600 ponys from a 496..

plus i have the 2.3l whipple side mount? so u think i would be better off with the 454 stroked over a 502? would the 454 have good top end and hp compared to a 502?

i take it your running a 502 mag intake, with the set up we use a merlin big round port head so in this case you wouldnt be able to use your intake..some use a squaree port intake on round port heads but with the whipple you will have some turbulance issues..as for top end you would probably get their quicker and it will have more torque with the 4.250 crank so i would say yes it would probably be faster..

just make sure you use main and head studs,.

A stroker motor has more torqe, a 502 will rev a little higher for more HP. A 540 is better more torqe and HP. I have a 489 4.25 stroke .030 over.

well im not planning on reving the motor very high, max rpm of 5300 and the stroker motor should be able to do that, right? the reason i cant go to a 540 is because i have been told that would be to big of a motor for my 2.3 sidemount whipple, right? thanks for the help

I have a 540 with a 2.3 top mount whipple. 775 hp @ 5600 rpm with 5 lbs of boost. However, the blower will heat up and the hp will drop the longer it is in higher boost range.

Correct, too much cubic inches for that side mounted whipple.

what is the reason why you cant use the sidemount on a 540ci motor?
