New power with vid
Finally got my new engine running on the stand. Still have to tear it down and get it painted, but it is nice to hear it run.

sounds good, keep on it

Thats one way to water the plants!!

Very interesting valve cover breathers. Chrome T-stat housings ???

Nice sounding engine, got some cam in it,what are the internals and cam specs, sounds alot like my engine. Are the exhaust tips dry at the end or are you just dumping the water out the hoses a little bit in the video?nice job. What is that engine going in?
|
The valve cover breathers are a little unique. They were on another motor I bought, I dont like the way they look, but they are functional. The holes in the covers are drilled too big to cover them with anything else. I am going to try to find some hose that looks better to put on there if anyone has any ideas.
It is a hydraulic roller with .632 lift. Running flat top diamond pistons and merlin heads. Scat H-beam rods and a GM steel crank. Zero decked the block and some mild port cleanup on the heads. The exhaust is dry to the end, the bleed off from the side of the pipes goes overboard on each side of the boat when everything is together. It is suprising how often poeple ask me why water is shooting out the side of my boat, they think the bilge pump is running non-stop. The dry exhaust is far too load for my taste, but is is what I have and very pricey to replace so it stays. I got started on the custom paint tonight, I will post pics when it is finished. My boat is a older 24 ft baja sport, not the ideal hull, but the guy that had it before me had a custom paint job done, external hydraulic steering, replaced all the guages, through transom water pickup and sea strainer, and replace all the interior, so it is nicer then it sounds and has a lot of nice parts. |
Sounds very nice!! Gotta love the dry exhaust sound...

Here are two more videos minus the plant

Now that is way cool!! I love the string on a throttle, that's is a classic!! I hope to be doing the same soon.. :)

Wow what a similar combination to my set up,i have a 509ci with diamond pistons,632 lift roller and it is also in an older 24 baja,it works awesome and is pretty awesome to drive, runs 80's all day,i would like the dry exhaust but already have cmi's with custom tails that cannot be used for dry and i am not spending anymore more money, cool videos.

sounds nice. i should be floor running my 496's this weekend. i'll do a post with a couple of videos also.
how did your stands do with your engines running? i was going to do the same thing however was a little leary of it flipping on the side. be sure and let me know how it worked out and if you would reinforce anything. i'll be it was hard for you not to crack the throttle all the way. looks and sounds great. any leaks? i think this is always a good idea regardless. john |
The stand worked fine, I used a rachet strap on each side to the truck and a fixed point in the garage. It didnt seem like it wanted to flip over at all, but I didnt rev it too hard.
I am glad you liked the string on the throttle, I waas pretty proud of myself with that one. I got the last coat of paint sprayed and will post a short vid in a little while. |

I got the last coat of paint sprayed and will post a short vid in a little while. i thought about that however i kind of wanted to run the sea pump and all other water lines as i am using the trs plate coolers and everything is new/used so i just want to be assured there are no leaks back there. also all my remote oil lines. stay in touch, john |
I went low tech, I used a compression guage with the core valve removed to watch the oil pressure , worked great. I thought the old barstool and 100mile an hour tape made a classy coil holder. I didnt worry about the oil temp, under no load mine will not build any oil temp any how.
Here is a quick clip of the pain, hope you like traffis cone orange. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=740Nn6CkRoU |
nice looking motor great job.

LOL i'll be sure and post my floor test run over the weekend. we can compare the idle of our cams. (king of the drive in contest) LOL... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llpVB5QJ2HM&NR=1 |

i went a little harry for 496's on the cams. sounds like we might be close on grinds. if must admit i always like the sound of a good cam. LOL... i mine sound close to yours i'll be happy. by the sound of your carb you got that pretty dialed in also. that thing is crisp... |
My cam is really not that big, it is 302/310 advertised duration and 114LSA. It is degreed to 110.5. I have not messed with the carb too much yet, it is a 950 proform body with quick fuel blocks and base.
I could go bigger on the cam with the dry exhaust and I may try it, but you have to pretty much go solid roller and I am not sure if I am ready for that. I wanted to stroke it but I already had the rods and pistons when I bought the block and crank. Then when the block got here it was already bored more then the pistons I already had, so I ended up buying custom pistons anyway. Now I have a very nice set of 4.53 srp pistons and total seal rings with no home that have less then 10 hours on them. I should have bought a dart block, but I had a hardin 10qt pan for a gen 5/6 motor already. |

I got mine running just before dark and took some great video shots only to find out just a bit ago that my settings were messed up and didn't get any sound. no leaks and everything went pretty well. i'll post some videos with sound tomorrow. i must have a blown power valve though as it seemed very rich and sucked way more gas than what i would consider to be normal. that was even after i adjusted both front and rear float levels. any other ideas on this. the plugs were also pretty black. i have 800 cfm holley's with 74's in the front and 82's in the rear. this is actually a little leaner than i planned to run however it was what come with the rebuilt carb from barry on the board here. i have another 800 i bought off the board also that i will swap out in the morning as i don't have any new power valves around at the moment and it will be sunday so no parts stores will be open. any other thoughts on the running rich? thanks, john ps it sucked through 3 gallons of fuel in about 4 to 6 minutes of running time. |
Holly crap that is a lot of fuel in 4-6 minutes. I ran mine for about 10 and used 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon. What power valves are you running and what is vacume reading at idle. I am no carb guy but something is off.
Did you take off the flame arrestor and make sure you did not have a float stuck from the carb sitting? Mine did that when I first started it this time, fuel was pouring out the overflow tube. Cant wait to see you videos, and hear that cam. I got mine back together after the paint, i will take a good video tomorrow and post it. PS, I dont know what parts stores you have available, but my local O'Reilleys has power valves in stock, and is open on Sunday |

Sounds damn good. I cant imagine going from 454/330hp to those, you are not going to know what to do.
Looks and sounds awesome. |
Nice exhaust by the way

i need a little more time on it to get everything A1. it should be a pretty good package. i might even hold off on the install until after a dyno pull or two. -496 ci -forged assm. -dart 310 rec. ports (valako) -dart intake -holley 800 cfm -comp cam custom grind hyd. roller (gellner) -super sucker spacer -stock tb-1V ign. -9.8 to 1 comp. estimated hp at 5800 rpm (600-610) dean gellner was a great help and assisted throughout the biuld. thanks dean. john |
