The question is not really if they work or not.......because they do. It is really a question of if they are necessary or will they benefit you on your particular build. For the average build, anything beyond the bearings is probably wasted money. Again, every build is different. Some may benefit more than others.
What are you looking to coat? We can tell you if it will be money well spent.

looking to coat engine bearings and pistons for BBC 598 Supercharge. Eddie do they sell the pistons coated from JE and bearings? Eddie what is you're opinion.

I use coated bearings all the time. They help for dry-starts, they are not going to save you if you lose oil pressure, unless you shut it down A.S.A.P. The coating actually holds oil on it. Some coatings hold oil and some repell oil. Piston skirt coatings work the same absorbing oil and providing a coated surface. The top coating is for heat, to keep it in the combustion chamber. I usually use a skirt coating on a fresh-up just for piston to cylinder wall clearance. A standard coating will add about .0016" to piston size and if the bore is just going to need a light honing it will keep you in spec. Some companys offer heavy coatings which they don't guarentee. Jobber price on rod and main bearings is around $130.00,per set, cam bearings $115.00, piston skirts and tops $39.00 -$43.00 per piston jobber/ racer. Just remember, the bearing coating is going to add about .0003" to the bearing thickness which will make the bearing oil clearance smaller.

As far as I know, JE does not sell the pistons already coated. Clevite does offer the H bearings coated and I think they are a good idea. They are really beneficial in boats, since the engines tend to sit for extended periods. The coated bearings offer protection for the dry start ups. They run about twice as much as the standard H bearings ( about $150/ set instead of $75), but it is cheap insurance.
As far as the pistons, it really depends on your set up.......what hp, boost, comp. ratio, etc.

Callies will coat the JE pistons they sell. They have the coated bearings also.
