Marine Alternators - screened?
 

Question. I'm replacing my alternators, and found a supplier on Ebay. Is the alternator supposed to be screened on front and back? His description to me in a e-mail says screened front, and sae back.:rolleyes:

I have the Delco single wire and it has screens front and back.

David. Thanks. I found somone on Ebay that can make me (2) new ones, and he mentioned a SAE back cover. (although his others look screened in the back).

Have you spoken with anybody locally to see if they can make them for you ? I know there is an alternator/started rebuilder up here in Gainesville, although I have yet to use him.

Doug. I looked all over this area. There are (2) folks that do rebuilds around here (one in Alpharetta on rt9, and one up on rt53 near the Outlet Mall ) that I found, but, I can get two of these for $110 (55each) @ 55-60amp, which is all I want. (mine are original 37amp units, and are not screened, motorola units). One does not work............kinda explains why I needed to run on both batts last year. In fact, I dont ever think I remember my voltmeters above 12-13volts.

I found this on e-bay, and he sounds like a very good reference from what I can see. And, the cost from what I'm told for each rebuild will be 50-80each, so I'd rather go with these.

.......have you noticed that finding marine stuff around here sucks. (although you can always go to GaryGrimes for stuff when you need it).

You can find stuff, just not when you need it. There's also Tim over at Pro Boat in woodstock, he's got a good supply of parts.

i haven't tried one but there are GM rebuilt marine alternators in JC Whitney. 65 amp, one wire hook up, $89.95.

Also, you can buy the screen kits for Delco one-wire alternators from Aftermarket Discount Marine for about $15.00. The screen kit is not listed on their web site, but just give them a call. They got 'em. You local alternator rebuilder will have one-wire internal voltage regulators for about $12.00 each. With these two items you can convert a remanufactured Delco automotive unit available from your Discount Auto Parts to a USCG approved marine unit for cheap!
