finish on Mercury labbed props?
I'm looking at a 30p bravo to buy, claimed to be labbed by merc.
I was under the impression that merc always put a satin finish on their props when they labbed them? I know my 28 has that finish. This prop is definately labbed but is shiny (stock finish). I prefer to stick with Merc's work when buying a second hand prop. Can anyone verify? Thanks, Ken |
I have owned six Mercury labbed props and all had satin finishes.

There is the duratec finish that comes on Mercury's Quicksilver Mirage line of props. It's shiny and supposedly keeps corrosion down.

The labbed props from Merc have a satin finish. DJM, the Duratec is on the stock out of the box props.

If it was labbed it should have a sheet and if it was done by merc Denis Cavanaugh's name should be on the paper. As far as the finish when I get mine back from merc I can use it as a mirror!

my labbed prop is not the super shinny kind but I have seen both types come back. Feel the front edge of the blades if it feels like it will cut you and absolutely puree a manatee then it is labbed. You can also call merc, they keep the blueprint for every prop they lab so they can fix it when we ding them up. Just give them the serial number and they can tell you if it was done there or not.

If the prop was bought as a lab from mercury and was not a rework the number part number is stamped with an L. If its a rework no L will appear but in either case the leading edge will be razor sharp
