What oil pan to use?
What brand oil pans do you guys like to use?
I'm looking for recommendation for marine application, 540 CI with Dart block. Thank you |
I assume you have 1 piece RR. main seal.
Here is what I used on my 540's http://www.cantonracingproducts.com/...ion&key=18-362 I also installed these so no more dry starts: http://www.cantonracingproducts.com/...ion&key=24-016 Smitty |

I'm looking for recommendation for marine application, 540 CI with Dart block. Thank you I have a few of the Keith Eickert cast aluminum pans. New they were over a grand each. think you can get them around $700 each now. If you like I will let two of them go for $400 each. They are either 12 or 14 quart,.......can't remember off hand. Jon |

Mark
Canton also makes pans for the 2 piece rr main seal. They have all kinds of pans. Are you looking for steel or aluminum. I went with steel to save $$$$$. Dave |
I use the Canton 18-364 - BBC REAR SUMP MARINE POWER PAN (18-364)
A little more money but it a nice pan. Kris Vogt |

Make sure you will have enough clearance under those KE pans. The stringers in our boats are close to the bottom of the motors. Smitty |
Canton here
|
Jon,
Are the KE pans the ones with the flat plate on the front and do they include the windage trays? If so, I will take both at $400 ea. Ben |

Jon,
When you get them out, see if the have the flat plate in the front. Keith used this surface to mount an external oil pump inline with the crank. He made these pans cast with and without the plate. If they have the plate, I will take one or two...whatever is left after Dock gets what he wants. Thanks, Ben |

Is this round flat with the hole in it right below the crank what you are talking about? Like I said earlier,..........if either of you are interested in any of the the three pans I would be happy to stip them down so they are ready to go. Thanks Jon |

Thanks to all of you that responded to this thread. I had oil leaks from day one on the new engines we built last year around the oil pans and we thought that new pans would be the best and proper repair. However we discovered with the help of the rigger and the original engine builder that we could solve the problem without new pans for very few $$$.
Thank you all for your input. Merry Christmas |

I have a Dooley 10qt on my jet. Nice pan. Have about 8 seasons on it with no issues. Still looks new. They make 8, 10, and 14qt i think.

Jon,
Thanks for the pictures but these are not the model of the KE pan that we are using. All, these are excellent pans and $400 is a very fair price. |

Here are some pics of the pans that I use. I have them cusom built to my specs. It has multiple one way trap doors to be sure that the pickup never comes uncovered. Also, the design of the windage tray ensures that the oil will not be aerated by the crank and rods.

I have a Dan Olson pan on my motor. It works great! The insides look a lot like the one Eddie has in his picture.

That's who builds mine. We have worked on and changed the design of the pan quite a few times to get what we have now. They build the best pans out there IMO. First class welding and customer service. We recently started doing a Tee sump pan that is really nice. I will take some pics of one and post it.

Eddie Thanks Jon |
Instead of the pan having a straight wall or a small kickout on one side, it has a larger kickout on both sides. The pan is essentially shaped like the letter T.

It is not a hole but an approx 1/2" thick "plate" that is part of the casting....maybe 4" X 6".

Hmmm,,,,,,,,,,,,,wonder what that mounting hole is for then ? Cause no part of my set-up was mounted to it. Jon |
cougarman,
Just curious as to why you have decided to not use those pans any more. Did you have any problems with them? I am looking at pans and trying to decide on one. Also do those pans clear a stock Mercruiser sea water pump, the kind mounted by the fuel pump. And do they clear a stock positioned oil filter. Thanks Jim |

Thanks Jim Jim, NO problems with the pans, Switching to Dry Sump pans and pumps. And yes to all your other questions they clear all item's. To give you a little history, these were originally built by Stotler if you follow the race circuit at all. Freshend by Carolina Racing, and then Chief Engines changed a few things on the top side of the engines. Guess what I'm getting at is I feel they are quaility parts and they were the choice of a very qualified engine builder also. Hope that helps with your concerns. They are very robust also. Thanks again Jon |
Jon,
Depending on the set up, I believe the hole was mostly used for the attaching the adjusting arm on a low mount alternator. Ben |
