Tall deck 427 into a 540?
possable or need the 502 tall deck? im goint to have rods pistons a crank and pan when im done with my build so i figuered id put anothe one together.

i dont think you can do it, but i may be wrong. my 427 tall decks were 60 over and stroked to 4.25, but that only made them 496. In order to put a 4.25 crank in that block you will need to take material out of the oil pan and block so that the rod bolts clear.

what bore was it?
|
540= 4.25 stroke and 4.5 bore
No way you can bore any 427 block to 4.5! |
I don't know about a 540 out of a 427 tall deck but several years back I had a 427 tall deck that was taken up to a 525cid. It dynoed at 618hp @ 5500rpm and 633tq @ 4800rpm.

TX i didnt think you could open it up that much but though d ask ll just look for a tall deck 502 in need of help
|
you dont need a tall deck to make a 540 out of a 502. Regular short deck 502 block will work fine, and easier to find parts for.
|
Actually most 540's are made out of stndard short deck.
|
cant with the rods and pistons i have
|
May be cheaper to replace rods and pistons then find a tall deck block and all the other crap that goes with using a tall deck to just make a 540. That is unless you are already running a tall deck and have the stuff. The correct 6.385 rods and proper pistons are off the shlf items these days. If you are set on going tall deck maybe consider building a 572 instead.

I have 540's already. Im buying new rods new pistons for them. Ifiguer with the left over buid a short block and sell it. Im not looking to build another from scratch just put something together to sell.

I used to build tall deck 427's for my flatbottom SS race boat and we found on the GM 427 blocks they did not like more than a 4.280 bore and a 4.125 stroke without seriously notching the bottom of the block around the pan rail and cylinder bottoms. This was tricky with early castings with the oil galley down on the pan rail. This gave 475 cubic inches and thats about all you will safely get out of an old 427 tall deck block. Your 502 rotating assembly is sized at a 4" stroke and a 6.135" rod only so your not gonna get anywhere near that 540 doing that way. Sell that tall deck 427 block to someone that needs that particular block.

Thanks Raylar i didnt get the block yet only located one. All i need is the crank and block to make a decent 540 set up i have the pan rods pistons harmonic and can grab a nice set of heads for the right money also have a decent manifold and rockers to put on it.
