Intercoms

i am looking at some intercom systems. I have David Clark headsets for the plane. I have a call into them on there 9800 series system. Any one using it? Any advise on this or other systems? I want VOX, stereo sound, able to integrate my stereo, Ipod, and cell. Many of the intercoms are Mono.. I will pay a few $$ extra for a stereo system.
Thanks

I have not heard anything negative about the David Clark system. For a comparison, you might also consider the Tiger Performance Products system.... lot's of options.

Thanks I will give them a call also.

Not sure what you have in your plane, but I have a panel mount sigtronics unit in mine and I'm quite happy with it. They also make a stand alone box that has music inputs and all sorts of bells and whistles. Reasonable price as well.

What are you flying anyway? :drink:

Don,

The David Clarks are very good units. I have also used Piratecom in the past. The wired set was ok. However, there is the wireless system they have now which I really like. It is capable of communicating up to a 1/4 mile. Real good for on the docks or talking boat to boat. We use them alot on the poker runs to communicate with the other photo or video boats.
Give me a shout and I can hook you up with my rep.

I run the DC marine units, I purchased them through "Bullhead" here on the forum. THEY WORK GREAT!

There is a BIG difference between the avaition and marine units, they are not interchangable.

The difference is in the head set plugs. Everything is sealed and the tips are very different. IE: the wiring and plug receptacles that are mounted in the boat are also very different than avaition. The intercom box is also sealed.

You can add with the purchase of a couple of extra cables, hook ups for marine radio, stereo etc.

Our boat stereo/radio through the intercom, sounds VERY respectable, We have voice activated for everything we use, but you can add a push to talk button intigrated with the marine radio, should you wish.

If you call David Clarke and ask for the Marine sales person (sorry I don't remember his name} he can explain to you in depth the differences. BUT basically, he stated if the avaition sets get wet, it could be a BIG problem and it is not covered under any warranty.

Believe me, I too wanted to use Avaition type, we have abunch of old headsets sittng around, but after hearing the difference, we opted for the "real thing".

The only problem we had initially, well actually there was two...

First, keeping them on my head with the regular headset(we have behind the head, sets.) All I did was call DC and they sent to us, free of charge an add on strap, that goes basically around your head to hold it in place, problem solved.

The other problem was really quite unexpected.... I can here my co-pilot (wife) all the time now, I never knew she screamed, laughed and grunted in the bumps so much, during a poker run!!!!! I have learned to tone it out (like all the other things in the last 27 years of marriage), but it did take some getting used to!

DC marine headsets/intercom is stupid expensive, but well worth the money in my opinion!

I think you guys unloaded at my place for the Pirates run, and you bought a boat from me for a customer of yours. Glen Harbor Marina
I called the guy on the web site for piratescom. he said my headsets would not work, he said the wired system was $3,000 and the wireless is another $3,400. I said $3,400 on top of the $3,000 he said yes. now I don't mind spending some cash buts that's steep even for an aviation system which its not. Feel free to have your rep contact me [email protected] but think the guy I talked to was Joe, but cant remember. I tossed my notes after the $6,400 price tag. And they are a mono system. The David Clark is stereo. Sigtronics has a 5 man stereo wireless system with everything for about $4,500. Maybe the guy from Piratescom misinformed me. it doesn't seem in line. I do like the 1/4 mile range.
Thanks for the info.

There aviation products are top off the line too. I called there rep no return call yet his name is Aaron Simmons. So how much is stupid expensive?
Thanks

That is not the guy I talked too, that being said, for the life of me cannot remember his name, we are in the process of building a home and living out of boxes, so unfortuately I cannot even get to my box with all the information... Sorry.

If I remember correctly with all the options it was around $3500-4500, from David Clarke. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE and found them listed for sale on here, still in the wrappers for substantially less...

Look around, or even post something in the wanted area, with all the repos going back, poss you can buy a used set of headsets and intercom box, all you would need to purchase is the cables?

I'll bet DC would grind on the price right about now as well. I have heard the economic downturn has NOT helped them either...

The only catch is you HAVE to go through a "dealer" to purchase any of the parts, they (DC) gave me a list of dealers to work with, when I added a couple of extra cables etc, and they (the dealers) will work with the pricing. But you have to ask and tell them you have a couple of other people that can get it for you as well... wink wink!

If you have an aviation dealer you work with regularily, they can get the marine stuff for you. Just have to ask and/or possible explain to them what it is you want. (again, making contact with the corporate rep is very helpfull, so you know what to ask for and what exactly you will need.)

The install went easy according to my installer, basically run the cables and plug everything in. (seems easy enough to me, but I paid him to do it (cost me $300 for the install.)

For us it was worth paying a professional to install it, It looks like it was made into the boat, not added on, sometimes it is what you don't see that truly makes the difference!

Good Luck!
