STEEL main caps for Chevy zz572

3 Attachment(s)
Hi,

I going to add a bigger blower to my zz572 and decided to go with steel main caps.
GM installs steel caps on their BowTie race blocks but they will not sell them separately.
So any idea where to find them or if somebody can make me a set?

Thanks for any help.
Mange

Is it worth the expence on a Gen 5 or 6 block? Even on a Dart block, steel caps are usually used for very large hp and rpm.

Cool setup you have there! What kind of blower is that? Eaton????

Do the Dart caps fit the GM block?

GM says max 800hp for these stock caps. Now we going to 1000+ and just want to be on the safe side.
I think it's pretty much worth it.

Thanks Panther, the blower on the engine is a 2.6L Autorotor. Swedish stuff.
The new one is also a Swedish one with 4.2L volyme. We going to use the same intake and cooler.
Also the Autronic SM4 ECU going to be the same.

Thanks

Pretty cool! Looks like a nice compact unit.

Mange,
There are plenty of steel caps available but before you buy them, make certain that you have a machine shop that can properly install them. The front four are generally not an issue for a well equipped automotive machine shop, but the rear cap definitely needs some different equipment to machine the thrust bearing surfaces correctly.

I agree with Bill K. You cant simply bolt on a set of billet main caps. The caps and the block need to be machined. Most machine shops dont have the proper equipment to do it correctly. In fact, there is only 1 guy around here who does. When I build an engine that I want billet caps for, I just order it from Dart that way. In your case, since you have the block already, you need to find someone capable and experienced to do it for you.
Here is a picture of my Dart block with billet caps...

Bill K,
I am always thankful for comments and experiences from professional engne builders like yourself. You guys make the part timers like me , just an amateur. This topic of bilet vs stock cast caps is one that has made me wonder. In your experiences, how much power are the stock Dart caps capable of safely handling? Do billet caps offer any real stability gains in the 800 hp range?
