Ediie, What kind of ballpark on the number of hours it takes to rebuild one of your 1200/1400hp motors? Wondering what the relationship is between usage and man hours for a rebuild.

Getting back to the Merc 850 and 1075 solid lifters...
Is there a hydraulic cam out there for these motors w/o scrificing power? Will it add to the time between rebuilds?

so the frshing you are talking about on some of the biger motors is just springs? Becasue of the biger cams? but nothing like pulling heads, ot rings or anything?

I spend approx. 300 hours total to tear down, machine, and rebuild a pair. It can be done much faster but I really take my time and concentrate on making it as perfect as I can. I am fanatical about cleanliness, so I spend a vast majority of that time just washing and rewashing the parts. For me, assembly is by far the least profitable of it all.

To answer your question....yes. A hyd. roller will not only extend the rebuild time, but it will eliminate the valvetrain maintenance beween rebuilds. You could make as much or more power with the right hyd camshaft. The problem is the programming. With the cam change, you will need to do some programming changes to work with the new cam.
