I run 9.5:1 with alum heads and 5psi no problems with extended beatings. 6.1psi, a new set of pistons this winter after an extended beating. I agree with Eddie. Keep it cool, 30* timing, 11.7afr at wot and 8# fuel pressure all the time and you will have a nice runner. Don't forget the good exhaust valves, head gaskets and studs as well as setting the quench under .040".

I think I'll build for 8.5 to 1. Seems reasonable and should be able to leave the pullies alone. Thanks,
John

IMHO, really good advice. I would love to see the torque curves between the Hawk and Merc 525sc, and the 502 Merc motors. I'm guessing the midrange on the Hawks would be significantly better.

If I was building it and it had cast iron heads, I would shoot for about 8.5:1. If it has alum. heads, then I would shoot for about 9:1. The higher static compression will let you run less boost so as to not overwork that little blower and tear it up. I would look for about 5-6 psi with either setup. With that blower turning any harder, you will just start to make heat, especially without an intercooler. If you have an intercooler, then you should be able to get away with another 1-2 psi boost. Hope this helps.
