Need to identify Volvo MEFI ECU version
I have twin 2004 Volvo 8.1GXiL inboards with the ECUs labelled E1HOPFI\04IB01, 3863470, 3863469. They may be more numbers on the back but I didn't remove them yet to check. I will if necessary. I'm trying to find out if these are the 4, 4a, or 4b models. Reason to find out is that I'm trying to see if a Maretron J1939-NMEA2000 gateway would work with these ECUs to output engine data and if these ECUs output fuel usage data. Volvo hasn't been wasn't able to tell exactly if the fuel info was output on these. They thought that the ECUs were either 4A or 4B. I need to find out before buying any electronics though.

You will need to look on the back. There will be an 8 digit #. The last 3 digits are as follows:
4=494 4a=479 or 717 4b=052 Eddie |
2004 MEFI's on Volvo GXi's will be MEFI 4B's. They cannot output fuel flow data unless they have fuel flow sensors somewhere in the fuel delivery system and programming in the ECM to record and output that data, which I doubt they were supplied with.
I can pretty much tell you what 420HP 8.1L engines use in fuel in gallons per hour at various loaded rpm's , but I am curious why you want to know? If you need this data and its really important to you , mount a fuel flow measurement system like Flo-Tech and you'll know exactly. Best Regards, Ray @ Raylar |
I'll pull one of them off on the weekend just to verify the number so I'll know.
There are no fuel flow sensors in the lines so I was looking into using the Maretron J1939/NMEA200 Gateway to output engine info to a NEMA2000 display. I spoke to Volvo and they were not 100% sure on the fuel data for version based on serial number. So far I thought the 4B version may have fuel data from injector pulses but not the 4A or 4 version. From what your saying none have it. This would have been easier then to install flow sensors like a floscan system. I may have to go the flow sensor route then. You ask why? I have lots of spec data on the model with these engines and fuel burn but nothing takes the place of live data to find the sweet spot when cruising in current conditions. Plus there are a number of other engine data outputs that could be displayed. That's the only reason. Do either of you recommend a scan tool that works well with this Volvo/MEFI system. I was looking at one from Rinda. Mainly looking for one to check what's going on with sensors, ECU, injectors etc for general maintenance/troubleshooting. Not looking to reprogram anything. Thanks for your replies Ray |
Here is some more stuff about the new NMEA2000, These guys seem to know a little bit about it.

MEFI 4B confirmed today. Number on ECUs are 12584052. So guys is this a definite no on any fuel data output from these ECUs? If so I guess fuel sensors in the lines are my only option.

Your MEFI ECM puts out GPH (gallons per hour) data and this can be monitored and logged along with all the other engine sensor data. Look up MEFI Scan on the MEFIburn website, and you can monitor and log it all. GPH is an interesting parameter to watch in real time, especially when you are going from idle to wide open throttle. It makes you very aware of how much fuel you are pouring into an engine under heavy load.
