Input needed on Drive Repairs / Parts

Upon inspection, I found that the bellows are cracked and need replaced. Not having all the time required and the space to do the work, I need some input on what should be done to fix. I've had the boat for two years, previous maintenance seems to be pretty good, everything runs great.

Boat has dedicated thru-hull exhaust, why is there an exhaust bellow also?

If everything is operating OK, is it necessary to replace the gimbal bearing while it's all apart? What about the U-joints as well?

Is it best to replace the shift cable along with the cable boot?

I had the power steering pump and actuator replaced last season due to stiffness. Steering still turns hard. My next alternative is to replace the steering cable. Could it be the top and/or bottom pivot that needs attention?

What's a normal amount of shop time to be expected for this work. Does Merc offer a complete package set of parts or are they only available separately?

Finally, could anyone suggest a reputable shop in the Kansas City or LOTO area for the work.

BTW - 92 Baja 240, 502 Mag carb with Bravo 1

Thanks, Travis

KC,
I think the bellows are on every drive because Merc doesn't know if the drive is going on a thru hull boat, one with silent choice or strictly thru the drive unit/transom. the latter two requiring the bellows. If I were you , I'd replace the shift cable while it's apart, they seem to go bad quite often, I'm probably going to have to replace one on my starboard engine, damn thing won't shift into reverse(going to try adjusting it first). I think this stuff all comes separately.
Best thing to do is go to one of the online dealers like doller offshore or bam and order yourself a service manual and parts list(this will show diagrams, part #'s and whether or not it's in a kit). Both of these places are very helpful (My compliments to Marc at BAM and Mindi at Doller !) . Two years ago I had both Gimbals replaced on my '93 Powerquest(Have to pull the engines) and a couple bellows replaced, etc., for $2500 at a local dealer.

Hope this helps,
Paul

Bam or Doller Reps.

Thanks Paul. That indeed helps.

Anybody from Bam or Doller here?? Drop me an email at [email protected] I'd like to purchase the service manual that Paul, aka boathead, mentioned. I'd rather purchase the parts from a OSO supporter than the local shops. Better yet already have a parts list together for what I'll need.

Thanks in advance.
