Torque and HP numbers for my new motor

Crazyhorse and KAAMA got a new Desk Top dyno program and we plugged some numbers into it today. Crazy and I started assembly this afternoon.

My motor is:
.060 over 454
GM Rect. port heads (slightly massaged, but nothing radical)
2.19 Intake and 1.9 exhaust valves
8.6:1 compression (actually a little higher than that, near 8.75 or so but the numbers are run at 8.6)
Dual plane Merc intake manifold
Holley 750 cfm carb
Cam specs:
Hydraulic lifter, flat tappet
114* lobe center
.527 intake, .553 exhaust lift
224.0 intake, 232 exhaust duration
All at .050 lift

RPM HP TQ
2000 178 467
3000 280 490
3500 335 502
4000 387 509
4500 432 504
5000 461 484
5500 465 444

When we ran SuperVs motor last weekend on the dyno, his numbers cam REAL close to what the desk top dyno said. I'm looking forward to running this motor!!!!! Gonna need a new prop for sure!!! This is easily 100 hp more than I had last year.

Oh, and at 9500 rpm it makes 63 hp and 35 ft/lbs of TQ. But I have to believe it would actually be making 0 hp and 0 TQ on the end of a tow rope at that rpm!!!!

Smitty 04-20-2002 07:17 PM

Mike,
Glad to hear that the motor runs---now get it in the boat!!

LOTO will be here before you know it!!!

Later,
Dave

Crazyhorse 04-21-2002 12:27 AM

His motor isn't running yet but I hope to have the short block assembled by tomorow afternoon (Sunday). Keep in mind the Desktop Dyno offers many variables but as Waterfoul said, SuperV's actual dyno numbers were less than 1% different than the DT projections. KAAMA's 540 dyno numbers were also very close, within 2%, of the DT figures.
SuperV and Dyno spent the day installing SuperV's engines in the boat today. Maybe the sea-trial can happen next weekend.

Smitty 04-21-2002 10:35 AM

OOOPS!!!!!! I guess I read that post too fast!!! Well either way get that motor together and in the boat!!

Dave

Waterfoul 04-21-2002 04:25 PM

Hey Dave, you making any progress without me??? Let me know if you need anything so I can pick it up after work on Monday.

BGIII 04-21-2002 05:58 PM

SWEEET. Let's hope desktop dyno is within 1% again.

Whitey 04-21-2002 10:40 PM

Hey Waterfoul I have a 27 pitch 3 blade prop collecting dust if you want to try, let me know and we can see about getting it over to you to try, Dwight.

Rambunctious 04-22-2002 12:59 PM

mike, I've got that 25" 3 blade we can try too, and my trusty tow line. you know the one end........... Hee Hee

i'm predicting 64.88888888 mph

DQUICK 04-22-2002 08:12 PM

HEY MIKE
WHY SO CONSERVATIVE ,WHY NOT MORE COMP AND CAM

Waterfoul 04-22-2002 10:00 PM

Conservative? This is basically the hp of a 500HP for about 1/10th the cost to me. It's about 100+ hp more than I had last year (or the year before that, or the year before that.....you get the idea).

Fred, we are in the process of installing pistons now. Everything is going really well. Crazyhorse's knee dictates the speed at which this is getting done. Which is fine with me.

MACDAD260 04-22-2002 10:36 PM

Good numbers, Mike.

Sounds like a 454 Mag with a few more cubic inches. Seems like a large increase over a stock 365hp 454 Mag Carb engine with just a cam change and headers. Interesting.

I hope it warms up soon. I want to get mine out this coming weekend if at all possible. I re-torqued the heads on the 502 this past weekend so I am ready to get it wet now. Where is that 85 degree weather when we need it? :D

Andree 04-23-2002 04:29 PM

Where I can get such a Desk Top Dyno and how much is it? Which Company produce such Programms

Zanie 04-23-2002 06:29 PM

Hey Mike,
Is your cam:
Federal Mugal CS1139R?
If so my engines in my 1984 Excalibur 31' are nearly identical to yours
only difference is I have worked oval port heads opened up for the 2.19 I 1.88 E valves.
Mine is .030 over 8.75:1 CR
Cast cranks 3/8 rods
They spin my 25 mirages at 5000 to 5100 with Q-jets!
70 mph GPS!
They make excellent power.

Enjoy yourself.

DS

Audiofn 04-23-2002 06:52 PM

Mike get that thing done bro. Time is a waistin and you only have some limited test time to find a prop and all that good stuff. :D:D

Crazy how is the knee by the way?

Jon

Waterfoul 04-23-2002 10:46 PM

The short block is pretty much together. I just got done with the second coat of paint on the intake manifold. Engine will make noise on Saturday!!!! If not sooner!! Then in the boat next week, and water testing soon after. For LOTO, I may not have the exact prop I need, but I will be faster than I am now!!!!

Got to Crazy's tonight and found out one of the rods was on backwards. The machine shop guy fixed it within an hour or so, but this is the second such mistake he made on my stuff. Bores were too small last week, which he also fixed while I waited/helped (the next day). As far as customer service goes, I like this guy, but for getting it done right, the first time.....I'll probably look elswhere next time. He's a nice guy, a great guy even, but two relatively simple, unavoidable mistakes, the first of which cost me two days of assembly time is unacceptable to me.

Need to get the boat home so I can re-wire the batteries, stereo, and paint the bilge!!!!!

Griff 04-23-2002 10:52 PM

Foul, those #'s sound good----almost too good. What you're doing is almost the same as I did to my engine. I thought I was probably around 425 hp. I wonder how much the .060 overbore is adding. Mine is a stock bore. My cam is 226/236 with a .534/.553 on a 112. Same heads milled .020 with no porting and 8.9 static CR. Same intake with a 1" open spacer and Holley 800. With this, I picked up about 350rpms. I'm spinning a little high though with the 23 Mirage+ at 5400 rpms and could probably spin a 25 pretty well. Can't wait to see the dyno #'s. I was basing my HP estimate on the fact that my engine was pretty close in specs to the older Merc 420's.

Crazyhorse 04-23-2002 10:55 PM

Audiofn, the knee is coming along really well, but it's really uncomforatable too. I can stand up for about two hours at a stretch before it starts to swell up and cause me grief. We plan on having Waterfoul's engine running for the cam breakin this Sat.
Andree, ProMotion in Brea, CA offers Desktop Dyno. KAAMA just bought their latest version, 59 bucks delivered to your door. They have a website, www.motionsoftware.com or their phone # is 714-255-2931.

253 04-25-2002 02:58 PM

Waterfoul, I just reworked my engine to almost the same spec's as yours, glad to see the dyno numbers, used same heads and cam, used 1.8 roller rocker on intake side, brings it to .558 w/[email protected],milled the heads .020,fired it tuesday, sounds great,I was hoping for 400 HP,hope to run this sunday, let us know how yours runs.

Katdrvr 04-25-2002 03:02 PM

The desktop dyno is really cool. The key to good numbers out of the software is good flow numbers on the heads. If you know your flow numbers you will get better results than just using one of the provided cyl. head choices.

mike

Crazyhorse 04-25-2002 04:54 PM

Yes, I agree. If you don't have the actual flow numbers you need to be conservative with the cylinder head selection for your particular application. KAAMA's been spending a lot of time with his DT and the flow numbers JimV provided him with for his 540 engines.

Cord 04-25-2002 05:21 PM

Andree- I think desktop dyno is distributed by Mr. Gasket. Jegs or Summit should have it.

Andree 04-26-2002 03:46 PM

Thank you for the info. I think I will buy a desktop dyno so I can play around before buying parts to upgrade my 454.

WETTE VETTE 04-26-2002 04:36 PM

The exhaust also has a huge bearing on the hp the desktop dyno will report. I have version 2000. What exhaust would you guys use for CMI E-top exhaust? Small tube headers with mufflers is what I use and the numers come out about where I would expect them to be.
