Spring maintence (pun intended)

I changed valvesprings on my 540 today. Fun , fun !
I used a different spring than last year , I actually went to a spring with a little less spring pressure. 650# open was a little much, now they are down around 580# , which should be a little easier on lifters.
It was an all day job , I had to reshim all the springs from what they were to 2.000" so it was very time consuming.
I wanted to fire the motor and do the valve lash but, the weather here in MI is supposed to get cold again and I don't want to winterize again.
Oh well just a little bored tonight and wanted to see what was up on the board tonight.

:D

Yeah. Fun job, isn't it? Congrats on getting it done though.

Yeah ,
I'm glad I got it done... it's supposed to snow tonight !!!
Gotta love that michigan weather !

I managed to hold of splashing last week when it was 70-80's. Just let it sit in storage another week or so, till it gets back up to 60s.

I feel your pain 26scarab, I changed my 632 Merlins on SAT. What a job, it took 2 of us about 2hrs to complete..."Tedious" probably best describs it. Didn't have to reshim or go through the lash again, (thats why I love those Jesel's) I run the Comp 948-16's; 330# on the seat, 950# opening. No need to go to the gym for a few days, that was one hell of a workout.

Hey Scarab,
How many hours did you have and what springs? How much cam lift? I am trying to keep track of comparable set ups for my own personal knowledge. I run the Comp 951 spring which is around 240# on the seat. The cam is a Comp solid roller with .714" of lift. Did you have springs break or is this a PM move? Thanks.

Jdnca1,
I too have Jesel rocker arms and have the right tool for changing the springs , but it was still tedious has hell. Can you believe my legs are still sore from being contorted in the bilge for so long.:D

Wette Vette,
It sounds like we have close to the same cams. Mine is also a Comp , .714" intake and exhaust, 254/268 duration @.050"
I run 1.6 rockers so it is a little easier on valvetrain.
I don't know what brand springs to begin with, the had 300# on the seat and around 700# open which was way to much for a 5800rpm motor. I switched to Comp 955-16's (the 951's were on backorder) and at a 2.000" installed height they are 240# on the seat and 580# open.
I had around 50 hours on the other springs and changed them so it wasn't so hard on lifters, plus the PM thing.

Our cams are close. Mine is a 272/280 at .050 on a 112 + 4 installation. I am running 13:1 compression in a 496" with fully ported 325 pro 1's. I run 1.7 ratio Jesels, which are sweet. I figure I will change my springs out somewhere 50 and 75 hrs for safety's sake. Did you dyno your motor? How much HP? My motor is lake tuned only so I don't know how much power it makes. It is enough to push a Baja 210 Sport 95.6 mph on radar so I figure 700 plus hp.

Wette Vette,
Mine is also on a 112 and in + 4.
I did not dyno my current 540 .
I did dyno the 502 which had all the same components.
Merlins (ported by Sterling) , Brodix Intake, and with 8:5.1 CR the motor made 625hp @5800.
The 540 is the same except the CR is 9.25:1 .
I'm assuming that it makes around 675hp.

Hey guys, what is the right tool to use when changing the springs?

Thanks
