Coupler to Flywheel bolts, are they special??

Just finshing up my motor 502 mag 415 and the last bolt i torqued broke. Not fun, took my 1 hour of drilling and easy out, breaking to easy out, but im in the clear now.

Dont have time to order new bolts as its all planed to get dropped in this weekend, so can i use grade 8 bolts with flat washers??

need to know asap...doing it tonight...

thanks

Bolts

I would go to any Autozone or similar store and buy a set of bolts designed for use in a stick shift automobile that bolt the pressure plate to the flywheel. They are not completely threaded to the hex head and ideally you don't want threads in the area where the drive plate holes are. If I remember correctly, the threads should start "down in the hole" of the flywheel so the shoulder of the bolt goes through the drive plate and into the flywheel. Hope this helps.

Here is a pic of the correct bolts. Like GK said, they have a shoulder that locates the coupler plate properly. You might be able to get them at a GM dealer also.

go to your local AP store and get a grads 8 bolt with the shank on it and trim it down..

And don't forget to use Blue Loctite. If your motor is slightly out of balance, the bolts will vibrate out over time. Either way use the Loctite.

I just bought flywheel bolts at my local Chevy dealer. Had them in stock.

I agree completely about using the Loctite.

I have used ARP flexplate bolts and ordered them from Summit. I have not mic'd them but I think that not only are they unthreaded just below the head, but they are either oversized or tapered to give a press fit. They won't quite go all they way into the flexplate hole until you are torquing them.

Do NOT use the washer, they will hit the bell housing and make a grinding noise, have to take it out and do it all over again, dont ask me how I know this,
