Optimum Trim Tab Location/Placement

On my boat (288 Sunsation), the location of the trim tabs are very close to the outdrive. The factory indicated that this was done intentionally to provide better "bite" in the water. However, I question this logic, and think that placing them further out would provide better overall stability. Should I consider relocating the trim tabs? I noticed that an F1 race boat (also a 288 Sunsation) had the tabs moved outward, but I did not have a chance to talk to the owner about it.

I would appreciate any input that you may have on this subject. Thanks in advance.

Hey FloridianSon, nice ride (not sure if that is the right term come to think of it)

If your drive won't hit the tabs, try reversing them left to right. You will lose less speed when you put them down. Because of the angle of the V, when you lower the tab the outside edge of the tab drags on the side. Took me a while to figure this out. Not a big deal, but if you are like me every little bit counts.

How did it work out?

Tabs will provide more stability when mounted near the corners BUT depending on how dry your hull runs at WOT, they may not have clean water to run in.
