Fuel Tanks
 

Have a buddy with a fuel leak. He thought at first it was the hose from the tank, but after removing the hose from the pick up the fuel still appeared in the bilge.
The boat is a 1989 24ft Baja Sport.
Is it common for the tanks to have leaks?? Can the tank be repaired?? If not wear is the best place to buy a replacement??

I just changed both of mine out in my Sport Cat. The problem was water would get in the tank compartment and then not drain completely out. The tanks sat on three strips of carpet. The water would wick up into the carpet and eveywhere the carpet was, there was signs of corrosion. One side had holes that went all the way through. I got two new tanks and had them coated with a thin coat of that stuff they spray in pick up bed, "rhino lining". Instead of using carpet for a cushion, I used the stuff they make wet suits out of. Soft yet won't absorb water. Oh yeah, I also opened up the compartment drain hole so the water would run out to the bilge pump. Tanks can be repaired, but in the big scheme of things, new ones aren't that expensive.

fuel tanks can be welded but they have to be cleaned well first, then completely full of water when welding.

Get a hold of Imco in southern cali and have them build you a custom one. They did a great job on the ones for the 38 footer is used to run.
