Hey guys! if I have a complete hyd external steering, not a add on where you keep the steering cable.Do I have to use a power steering pump.I don't want to run it if I can do without it.Single engine small block 20'boat it only weighs 2800# and could use some feel in the steering. If so is there a diagram somewhere on plumbing it. Thanks JOHN SR

you need the pump,it would be tough to turn the wheel without it.

Depends on the helm unit you have. The Eaton Char-lynn are designed to work with a P/S pump. Capilano (variable displacement) and Hynautic (fixed displacement) do not use one. The teleflex web site has some good information on it on plumbing if you search around enough.

I have a charlynn helm with the four hoses,it's made to use with a power steering pump.My steering ram is a imco .Can I go to a hynautic or teliflex helm and use it so I don't have to use a pump, and the electric's are way to much money. Thanks JOHN

Here is a spreadsheet I came up with to model the steering system on my mistress. You'll need to figure out what kind of helm displacement you'll need to have a reasonable lock-to-lock.

I found a used hynautic setup and am going full manual, no PS. I figure its one less thing to break.

Yes you can use a teleflex or hynautic helm. The problem I had with my hynautic system is I have 2 rams and the lock to lock is around 8 turns. not enough cu.in./revolution. I am now going to a charlynn system with the 4 hoses and a power steering pump. With a single ram I wouldn't have minded the hynautic system. You need a pressure can/reservoir with the hynautic system, and with the teleflex system you just need the helm. I just sold a tilt teleflex helm, I still have a Hynautic H21 that I was using.
