Carb/Fuel pump Help
 

350 SBC Holley 600 Carb and mechanical Fuel pump. Engine only runs with choke on. when choke is opened slowly by hand engine acts as if it's starving and stalls,Will tach up if choke is left on. I replaced the filter/water sep and cleaned the screen filter in the carb inlet and still the same problem. I want to check the fuel pressure with a gauge. what should the pressure be? Also if the pressure is good should I assume the carb has debris in it and tear it down? Thanks for your help.

i run mine at 6-7 psi,,check for a vacume leak,loose bolts,bad intake gasket..Could be a number of things..

you think lack of fuel ? not sure i agree w/ that. if lack of fuel when choke open where is the fuel coming from when the choke is closed ? when choke closed you make very high vacuum which might be compensating for all manner of things...

bottom line for me would be to unbolt the carb and bolt on another one... ANY other one on and see what happens. that at least isolates the problem. if it runs ok then you have a carb issue if it runs just as bad then that is equally as good info..

also... you don't talk about where you started with all this... are you saying you parked the boat last night and it was perfect and this morning it won't run or that you just assembled this motor and its the first time you have started it... each of those scenarios and everything in the middle sort of has its own path to travel when you are chasing an issue like this. the first step on one path might be the last thing you want to do under a different set of circumstances.
