oil line size
I'm about to be in the process of finishing my engine when I get the short block from my engine builder hopefully next week. I have a complete oil/cooler setup off a '99 HP 500. Will the stock lines be ok on a 550 hp bbc at 5900 rpms? If not what do you guys suggest?

Don't take this the wrong way but this topic has been beat to death here. Try this link http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...ghlight=smitty
You should be able to find all your answers there. |

If you want to really improve the oil flow efficiency in the stock system, just replace all the chitty 90* fittings merc used with some "full flow" fittings from your local hydraulics supply.
The steel fitting that threads thru the filter adaptor and the one between the engine block and the remote adaptor / oil thermostat can be removed and bored out safely to 5/8". Those are the most restrictive areas of the factory set up. |
Thanks guys... I was going to switch everything over to AN 12 but that would be another $2-300 and my budget is so blown by saying its only a few bucks more to do it right. If there is something I can not do and be ok at this point thats what I'm doing! Changing out the 90 degree fitting would be real cheap so I think I'll do that and call it a day!

Mike,
More Power Racing has dyno'd up to 1,800 HP engines with -10 AN line and fittings running to and from their remote filter canister with a total of about 12' of line/hose. |
Cool! Then I'm fine with what I have. I'm nowhere near 1800 hp. lol!

I use 12AN lines and fittings. I am not familiar with what merc put on the HP500. The stock 330 equipment worked fine for a stock engine but when you up the HP it did not work well.
