zero effort shifter cable installation

How do I connect my cables to the zero effort throttle/shifter? I have 33c cables and I do not see how they connect. Where I would think the cables should attach there is only a pin that goes through the bottom of the shift lever. Am I missing something? Any tips?

Yeah I have been wondering the same thing. Can some one post a pic of the actual 33c cable end that I need.

Well I'm not the only one.... This is frustrating, when I ordered my cables from Eickert they said I didn't need anything. There has to be some sort of adaptor as I see no way to get that treaded end in and secured.

If you follow this link and look in the picture an #40 I'm taking a stab in the dark that this is the cable connection. However there is no part number for it?

I see that your using the same trim switch that I am.. are you going to run the wires inside or outside... I have mine inside now but I'm afraid they may jam something.

I just took mine apart. Apparently you must knock out the pins and use the standard cable ends. I will just make some at work. 10-32" thread

Those are for the shifter and the carb. I have that package. I think #40 in that diagram is our missing link!

You need the #40 connector. It is actually a hook, not a loop. You leave those pins in place, hook the pin and then secure the cable at the bottom. As long as the cable is secure, the hook will stay in place as the cable basically pulls in a straight line. Here is a better parts list from Mercruiserparts.com . #40 is listed there (and not cheap  )

good grief that's a rip off! Thanks for the better parts list... Looks like I need to go to the marina and order more parts tomorrow!

$34.56/ea LOL! I'll make a few in the next couple of weeks and just live with my Morse controls for now.

RT930turbo 06-29-2010 09:17 AM

I'm going through the same thing right now with mine. Those hooks are expensive! I've been thinking about making some up myself.

It could be done, but you really need one to model off of because they have an odd angle and shape. There are just pot metal so it would not be too hard to fabricate something from aluminum.

I just ordered a set from my local merc dealer, ouch....... I called Eddie marine this morning and they didn't know if they would fit. From his discription of the pin size they wouldn't. Plus they were still 20 a pop.

Does anyone have an actual picture of one of the ends? All I have seen is the parts book drawing. I may be able to come up with something if I have a better Idea of what the merc part looks like.

Thanks!

Are these guys still this hard to find? I have a broken one and all I could find was this thread on how to replace. Also I'm not sure how it attaches to the cable. 845281CLEVIS Control Cable
Sorry to bring back an old thread.

Not hard to find at all. Just google the part number. They are quite expensive, around $30. They screw onto the end of the cables.
