What are these wires for?
 

On the inside of the transom (engine compartment) of my bravo drive, there are two thin wires that come out, one orange, one black. What do they do? What are they for? They come out where the trim hoses come out, way at the bottom of the transom assembly. I know they are not the wires for the "hockey puck" trim indicators. They are a dual wire, and all black.

Any help appreciated.

Those are for the mercathode system (helps prevent corrosion)

Oh REALLY!! Maybe I should hook those up since the ugly thing is still on my motor. Or, can I remove the mercathode since I never leave my boat in the water (always fresh water by the way) more than a few days at a time???

I'm leaving mine off for the same reason. You really can't remove the wires, because they are attached to the thingy on the bottom of the gimble that looks like a epoxy freighter. If you remove the freighter gizmo you'll end up with a leak due to a hole that it formerly covered. Either loop the wires and tie them off, cut them off, or make up a cover plate for the hole.

BTW-we should be certain that we are not talking about your trim indicator/limit switch wires. :D

You can remove the whole thing if you want. It's only two
nut's with fixed stud's. On our old boat we made plates
to cover the holes on both drive's with a good gasket material.
Just one more thing to clean up and get out of the way.

If I remember correctly it just has a small O-ring there now.

I think Merc makes a zinc or a plate that bolts on in its place. My Alpha had the Mercathode, and the Bravo transom assembly that I replaced it with had what appeared to be a zinc in its place. You will also have a Mercathode module mounted on your motor close to where the starter solenoid is located. You might want to disconnect the power lead to this as well.

Anybody who wants to unload one or two of those mercathode assemblies, let me know. I need them for my tank that stays in the water. Thanks

Ok, how about $30+shipping? I already have a block off plate made up, so I'm good to go. I think that there are two main components to the system. The do-hicky below the gimble and the blue box. Are there any other components? Do you need the mounting bracket?
