thermostat change-out help needed!!

i have a 454 mercruser .......i want to change the thermostat but im having a hard time removing the old plastic collar from the housing, any tricks or suggestions???????

they make new brass ones then you can just break the old one :angry-smiley-044::angry-smiley-044:
