Just to add my 2 cents, I have had others boaters say the same thing about my motor, AND IT IS THE FLAPPERS! Seems to be louder of course, when the engine hatch is up!

I had the exhaust flapper noise with my old boat and it worried me at first. In my case the noise more of a "tick" than a "knock".
