502 MPI intermediate shaft question??

I received my rebuilt 502 (509) back from the machine shop and think I may have an issue with them forgetting to install the Melling intermediate shaft. I went to prime the motor via the screw driver/oil pump method and realized that the intermediate shaft was not installed. I called the machine shop and they informed me that usually they install it when the motor is right side up and right before installing the distributor. I have attempted to do just that but it looks like the collar on the male end is to large to fit into the opening right before matching up with the oil pump.

Any suggestions or do I have to drain oil, remove oil pan and start all over?

If it has the retainer collar over the pump end you have to install it before the oil pump is installed. Merc motors have the retainer loose so you could do it after, but you still need to get the retainer on the pump.

Thanks Ted G.

That is what I was afraid of. I am not really sure if i should feel confident in the rest of the engine build knowing now that they missed a step like this.

That's kind of what I was thinking as I read your first post. When you take the pan off to install the drive rod, have a good look around to see if you find anything obviously wrong.
Give me a shout if I can help.
