454 Mag W/whipple ECM advice
I have a 94 454 Mag (FI converted) with a whipple, minor head work w/enconel valves, I have a issue with the boat loading up and flooding when loading on the trailer, de-weeding the drive, and sudden on/off throttle situations. I am the second owner of this boat and do not know for sure the origen of the ECM tune, What can I do to get this thing to run a little cleaner and not flood? It also has some studering when first getting on plane (maybe 2-4 seconds) then cleans out and runs strong. Boat idles and runs fine 90% of the time other then the above senerios. I was told that this is what you have to deal with when owning a whippled motor but with all the technology out there I would think there is a expert ECM shop or guy that could improve on this setup.
Thanx Kyle |
Boat flooded last weekend and left me sitting for 20 minutes, then at the end of the day died while idling to the dock and wouldnt start agian, changed fuel seperator and started up Friday with no issues (sat for 5 days) no signs of water in the filter.

That is absolutely not what you have to deal with. Who ever did the tuning obviously wasn't very good. It can certainly be made to run better than that. As a matter of fact, it can be made to run as good or better than it did before the Whipple was added. It just needs some fine tuning.
The hesitation off idle is probably a lean spot. That is a hard spot to tune because the engine transitions so quickly through that area. It goes from a very small load at idle to quite a bit of load as soon as you try to get the boat on plane. I would be glad to do the tuning on it. It sounds like it is pretty close and just needs some fine tuning. If you don't have O2 bungs in the exhaust, then they will need to be added. It must be done in the boat, not through the mail. Give me a shout if I can help. Eddie |
