Trigger coil & Coil symptoms?

How can you tell if your trigger coil or coil is starting to get faulty?

Having hesitaion, and two suggestions have been, replace the coil and replace the trigger coil under the distributor cap.

happy to replace what is broken, but hate spending money on parts that aren't (and still having a boat that hesitate over 3500 RPM)

454 Magnum, 1990, bravo drive CMI headers, Running a stock rebuilt carb.

Took the trigger coil out, looks fine, nothing visually wrong with it. Not sure if it can be tested??

Just took out the trigger, looks o.k. but one terminal looks black coated, and needs cleaning (strange, does not look like corrosion)

Check the OHMS.

OHM meter ont eh R x 1K setting.

Green & white = 3 (3,000)

and the Red & White = 9 (9000)

I recently changed the trigger, cap and coil on my boat chasing a miss in the 3200 to 4000 rpm range. As it turned out the tachometer was bad. In that particular sweep of motion it stole enough spark to cause a bad miss. WOT or below 3200 was fine. Something to think about on old boats with newer motors.

The Tach??? I would have never thought that could effect it.

Could you disconect the tach to check if that is the problem??

New trigger coil (the one under the rotor)... no luck.

New ignition coil...no luck.
