Wake Jumping pics
Let me just start with yes this is a naive post. I've seen some really cool pics posted from poker runs and many of them are staged for a following boat to jump a wake and voila really cool picture. I'm attending a poker run this weekend and I know there will be a photographer taking these types of pics.
I've seen the bass boat wake jumping video and I've seen the recent boat crash on Mead and I'm just not interested in endangering myself or my passengers. Is there a safe way to get the cool pic? I have a Rage. Thanks. |

I was at a poker run this past weekend and we carried a 38 top gun 2 boat lengths completely out of the water....a 42 Tiger was beside us and he was getting 5 ft up and leaving 2 boat lengths of un-touched water too.
Now, you don't go out and jump a wake without learning how and the reality is you don't try. You learn how to drive the boat fast as you can in the conditions and it happens to leave the water some.....takes time and experience to learn. First time you rode your bike you weren't out riding with no hands were you? BTW: those shots are often one of 100 a photographer took while riding in a helicopter beside the boat for several miles. |
The chances of having that photographer and helicopter there at the exact time you launch is usually slim.
The safe way is do only what you have done before and know what your boat is capable of. Remember, the flying doesn't hurt..........but the landing might. |

Great shot. The bay certainly has enough nasty wakes to air out, that's for sure. Darrell |

Darrell Is this Darrell from Bay Shots or did I just M.A.A.O.M.S. ? |
From my experiance these are not people jumping wakes for photo op's, waves are a mix from the many boats and you will find yourself in a slalad bowl of waves/wakes.
At this point you will be doing everything you can to keep the boat in line. Crossing a wake, hoping for a pleaseing photo could likley endanger those around you. Best just enjoy yourself, make some new friends and be safe. |

DO NOT TRY to stage a jump behind another boat.....you"ll come too close to the other boat and won't be paying enough attention to everything else going on around you. |
here are a couple more from the same day

Yep, we were just running across the bay with a helicopter following. When it pulled in beside us the captain pushed the boat from a 50mph cruise to "whatever we can get out of her!!". A videographer and photographer were hanging out the chopper for 3-4 miles to get that pic. (a WHOLE lot of them the boat is cutting the waves fine or compressed with the bow deep into a wave)

OK, now I understand
We participated in our first poker run yesterday. What a freakin' blast! When I started this thread i was conceptualizing a photo boat with folks jumping off the wake for pics. It wasn't a huge poker run, only about 30 boats but the idea that things could be organized so you would know where the photo boat was was completely dismissed.
That being said there were numerous times where the Rage was flying. Haven't seen any pics yet but they wouldn't have been hard to get. Note to self: even the stuff you thought was put away well enough to not blow out or tip over, check that again. Like many things one must experience this to appreciate it. And it's not bad that we pulled three queens and won the thing! Looking forward to the next one. |
See, I thought the idea was to keep the boat in the water? The flying is great but the landings are never good, not even the softer ones. Pics of air time are great though but to try to do it on purpose just for a photo op? Sooner or later the opportunity presents itself and you'll get the pic, not sure I want to pound on my boat and myself just to get it?

Yup you missed two good nights on the docks !!!!!:drink: |
You're right. It's not about wanting the boat out of the water but it does happen when you're running with all the other boats. It was rough but as with a lot of the advice I get here, getting on top of the waves makes it a smoother ride. Now I know why y'all are running 30 & 40' boats.

How about some pics of pinion gears going through the gearcase along with broken or twisted propshafts along with a pic of the frown on boat owners face when he finds out he can't jump any more wakes until next season ?
