Setting timing on a 575sci

I am trying to gather some info on setting timing on my 575's after my rebuilds and have a few questions. My manual tells me that I have two options:

Option 1: Use the digital diagnositc tool - don't have

Option 2: Use the mercruiser timing tool - don't have

From the picture, I beleive I can just jump A and B on the data link connector on my harness which should set me to 8 degrees BTDC... correct? At that point, I need to throttle to 1800 rpm, check timing, verify that it is 8Deg BTDC. Once set, idle down, shut down and tighten distributor.

That should be it correct?

Use a paperclip to jump the A and B terminals. Then set the timing to 8* BTDC. You can rev it up a little to help stabilize the timing. It won't move when you rev it up, it will just stop it from bouncing around.
Let me know if you need any help. Just give me a shout.
Eddie
