new gas tanks
 

I heard old gas tanks were .090 thick, and new ones are either .090/.125 1/8''/.190 3/16' or 1/4'' my new tank will be 30'' tall 10'' long 76'' wide about 98gals and was told 1/8'' was good at 100gals, but for 220 more I can get the 3/16, heard they built new tanks for ol at 1/4''. so am Iok at $930 for a 1/8 thick tank or should I spend the extra 220 for the 3/16''. thanks got to call it in monday.

If you don't mind paying the money go ahead and get it thicker. Before you install it coat it in a 2 part epoxy paint to put a layer of protection between the tank and any water. Don't use rubber aroung the tank or under the straps if it has straps to hold it down. If you want to use anything use Neoprene. Aluminum and rubber to mix and will cause corrosion. You can put starboard down under the tank but its difficult to find anything that will stick to it. You can also take some marine ply wrapped in glass and glass it down to get the same results. Don't put foam around or under the tank to hold it in place. It will eventually hold water no matter what the foam is. It would be best to through bolt it to a stringer.

the starboard was from a web site the builder told me to check out, I am worried about flex with the tank, if the foam lasted 20yrs before a leak, tanks need to be support so they don't sag flex and break. they said to stay away from corings cause if water gets in thats why they say starboard glued with 5200. but that means extra bulkheads on the side. I thought about painting it with apoxy or trying to glass wrap it and foam and bolt it back like saber had it Iam going nuts:grinser010:

Have it coated with spray on bedliner or epoxy coat it. Either way the aluminum prep is key.

thanks jeb, I thought about paint, how is your mom doing are you going to kw, think Iam going to skip it and run the boat until it drops to 40s.
