look at distributor cap
I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a white power like build up in the distributor cap. MSD tech guy said it can happen in a boat if the cap is completely sealed. I got new caps and drilled a couple of vent holes, no more problem.
.... A 496 does not have a Dist Cap....lol...
