How Much Horsie Power?

I have a question for all of gear head's out there. I have a 2002 Caravelle 232 Interceptor Sport Cabin with a Volvo Penta 5.7GXI with the SX Drive. 3400lbs with full fuel and Me.

Here are the upgrades I have done to the engine:

Head has been Ported and Polished,

Imco Thumper Power Exhust Manifolt and SS Riser's,

Threw Transome Exhust,

Roller Rockers,

Procharger supercharger 9psi boost,

upgraded fuel system to handle 9psi,

ECU fuel curves changed to handle the boost,

Compression lowered to 8.5 from 9.4

I am running a 14 1/2 X 30" Lab Finished @ 5400rpm

Stock horse power was 320hp prop shaft...
1.43 Gear Ratio

I am wondering how much Horse Power I really have? Is there any way to find out without putting the engine on a dyno? If not who has a good dyno and how much does it cost?

mcollinstn 05-11-2002 02:03 AM

Are you seriously telling us that you are running 93 mph?

You have mondo HP.

Somewhere around 510, maybe ?

Interceptor232 05-11-2002 02:09 AM

I put on the "Depends" when I take up her up to WOT...

Interceptor232 05-11-2002 02:13 AM

Here's a Video clip of what the Boat ran like stock, the only mod was transome exhust...

9 lbs of boost? Caaaaaaaaa Boooooooom! be carefull.

pullmytrigger 05-11-2002 10:11 AM

The people at Procharger should be able to tell you......

cobra marty 05-11-2002 10:42 AM

Heads, exhaust, rockers, but lower C.R. and around 325-350HP.

Add the supercharger intercooled EFI
= 325-350HP X 9/16 = 508-547HP.

Interceptor232 05-11-2002 01:45 PM

Thank's for the Number's. I talked with procharger, they didn't know because I have somewhat of a custom setup. I was thinking I was around 550hp but was not sure, also does anybody know a place where I can get the engine dynoed here in So Cal?

jbrauer 05-12-2002 08:50 AM

Be sure to let us know what your new top speed is...

... and how long it holds together at 9lbs!!

Be careful and have fun!!!!!!

Interceptor232 05-12-2002 11:32 AM

My top Speed so far has been 94mph on gps. This was done on San Diego Bay. I had more throttle but the Chine Walk from Hell came along and made me soil my pants. I have K Planes and Lathem dual Stearing rams which help a hell of a lot, but I don't think the guy's over at Caravelle ever thought of desiging a boat that would go this fast. I have to say that the boat run's great up to 80mph past that point I don't think there is any boat in the water...:(

Interceptor232 05-12-2002 11:37 AM

Also a when I am cruising @ 2500rpm about 40mph I am only running 1-2lbs of boost so 99% of the time I never see that 9psi.
I also average about 6 1/2 mpg at cruise and at wot I get soiled in my pants fuel economy:(

Interceptor232 05-12-2002 11:40 AM

Does anybody know how much power the Volvo SX dirve can handle? Also does anybody out there make a drive cooler like the bravo I drive cooler for the SX?

mlitefan 05-12-2002 02:13 PM

I thought you said you ran that small block Volvo at 101mph before you backed out? Now I am really confused...

Your video shows you going about 57~58 mph...according to the speedo...

WETTE VETTE 05-12-2002 04:50 PM

Damn, that hull must be pretty fast!!!

My 1990 Baja 210 Sport is 20' 10" long and weighs around 2800 lbs. It has a 700 plus HP 13:1 compression 496" BBC and my best speed is 97.8 MPH on GPS. With 550 HP my boat would probably be somewhere in the low 80's. I have seen Caravelles around, but didn't realize they are capable of attaining those kinds of speeds with small block HP. Hell there aren't to many cat hulls that can go that fast with that little HP. You must be doing something right. Be sure to be careful!!!

mlitefan 05-12-2002 09:55 PM

Wette Vette...he talked this BS on another site as well...said AZ Speed and Marine did the upgrades and he ran 101MPH before he had "to back out"...

all on a small block...

Hey…if it’s true, more power to him…

Just ask KOOK about a 90+ 24 foot boat…:D

WETTE VETTE 05-13-2002 08:58 AM

Before he had to back out?

That MUST mean there is MORE there!!! Damn!!!!!!! If he had my motor he would do 120 before he had to back out of it!!!!!!

mlitefan 05-13-2002 10:21 AM

Can I have your motor??? :D :D

jdnca1 05-14-2002 03:56 PM

Holy S**T, I think I need to sell my 900HP 632 Merlin and go with a blown small block set-up on my 3800# cat. Hell @101 I would be running the same speed. I could put some more $$$ back into the market. What is the make and model of that gps...I need to put one of those in.

Steve 1 05-17-2002 11:50 PM

Must be the Neutronium Hull !:p

Mercury 6.2 MPI 320 4800 - 5200 13 3/4 x 21 SS 59-63 MPH

Well looking at the Chart we can see a 1 MPH Increase from 20 Hp (350 Mag-6.2 MPI) Doing the Math 100 MPH = 37 MPH Increase or 37 x 20 = 740 HP now that extrapolation works if all things remain the same. Like air and water friction ! but the bad news is they do not!! So a factor would have to be added to that number.
:p

jdnca1 05-18-2002 12:17 AM

Interceptor...did you get that gps out of kilometers mode? seriously...what happened to you, I sure hope that hull didn't delaminate from all that speed.

OSO'rs we've seen some good ones from time to time, but this has to be the best one. He claimed he was running 90 with his KPlanes alll the way down:D :D :D

WETTE VETTE 05-18-2002 01:25 PM

That BS detector works good!

At least he is smart enough to make his rpm/prop/gear ratio add up to the speeds he is claiming. I would say with that motor and boat he would really turn a 30 Bravo somewhere around 4000 rpm. Maybe 4500 with his k-planes all the way up. :)

rjcardinal 05-18-2002 03:23 PM

There is a guy on this board with a similar boat. Brad Perry has a 22' baja with a 540ci blower motor on it. The motor has been dynoed at 868hp and he hit 105mph. So this guy has a bigger boat thats probably heavier with a small block with a couple hundred horses less and runs faster. I dont think so.

90mph with the tabs down makes me laugh too.

Ron

Look here is the Performance Profile from Procharger,These are for Carbureted Applications ,But close enough ! Check out Mariah for a base Parallel ,That Slug would have to be making between 850 and 1000 horsepower.

Well I took my 232 Interceptor out this moring. I took it out on San Diego Bay around 5:30am it was Like Glass... The Procharger is Awesome, it has the most awesome sound when it is spooled up. There are some things that I need some advice on from any of you guy or gals that are experts about speed. First of all my idle is 600rpm and the boat idles at about 9mph, which makes it tricky as hell to dock or put on the trailer, second I took the boat up to 90mph and I started to get massive chine walk and the boat felt very, very unstable? The guy's at Arizona Speed and Marine told me that they took it up to 97mph on Gps and didn't have any chine walk, but they were on a fresh water lake, not the ocean. I have K-Planes and I put them all the way down at high speed but it didn't much good at all, I think the boat is way to much out the water, I then trimmed the drive down which stopped the chine walk but I ended up lossing 5mph in the process. Now to my Question is there something I can do while driving to prevent chine walk or am I just screwed?

:p :p

I am still alive and Kicking. I took the boat on a 250 mile jury this weekend. The drive is holding up fine, and everything is running awesome. The Chine Walk can be over come by driving skill. I have learned how to correct it up to 97mph, past that i can't control it. I did hit 101 mph on GPS which me happy as heck. 95% of my driving is done below 70mph most of it around 40-45mph. I can't go any faster than that in the ocean with the swells unless I want to play Space Shuttle... I know somebody had a question on how my 5.7GXI can hold that much power, The 5.7GXI is a High Output motor with forged pistons and extremly strong interals, it is nothing like the 5.7 GI or GS motors. Yesterday I changed the pully setup to kick it down to 5psi of boost instead of 9psi. I have about 550hp instead of 650hp, I was burning way to much fuel with 9psi at WOT my fuel burn was 65 gph, Now at WOT I am buring 46gph. I still can hit over 90mph with the 5psi and that is quick enough for me. I will be posting some Video's Clips later on this week of a couple of high speed run's...
