Replacing Oil Seal Behind Gimbal Bearing
I am getting ready to replace the oil seal behind the gimbal bearing. The parts breakdown shows the seal going in flat side first. Is this correct? I would think since the outdrive shaft goes through the bearing and seal to the engine coupler, the flat side of the seal should be facing out. Please help! Thanks

I went through the same thing I pulled the old ones not looking at wich way they were. I ended up putting them in the way the parts manual shows flat side in first. I had to rig up a ram out of galvanized pipe parts to get it in. I used a 2" coupler with a 2" to 1" bushing, a lenth of 1" pipe and a cap. Also wrapped a little electrical tape arround the end to give it a snug fit that held the seal in place before driving in.

The problem with mine was I didn't take it out so I had no idea. But between the manual showing it that way and grease on only one side of the seal (which wasn't the flat part), I figured it must go that way. I just put mine in almost the same way. A 2" piece of PVC pipe and a block of wood.
Thanks for the reply. Now if I could figure out the engine alignment tool I'd be all set! |
