In my setup what is going to hit a wall first, the cam or the carb

IMHO that cam is a poor choice for a 540 ci N/A engine. The bigger cubic inch engines like a wider LSA like 112 - 114 and I would increase the duration and lift. Those heads will support .650 lift with mild work, it would be nice to add compression but not a requirement. I also would spread the intake and exhaust duration, adding 6 -8 degrees of exhaust duration to the intake duration. You should contact Bob Madiera of Marine Kinetics 585-654-8583, you won't be dissapointed.

In your guys opinion how much HP will I see with just a dif cam? Don't care how it idles and I have dry exhaust so don't have to worry about reversion

Jeff P31 12-08-2010 07:11 PM

The only way to know for sure is to run it on a dyno !!!!!

OK I'll let everyone beat me up for my opinion but here goes: I'd use a 236/244 duration @ .050 on a 114 LSA with .640 - .650 lift both sides, Intake centerline about 110 degrees. Do all port work on the exhaust side of the heads, at least bowl/pocket blend. I'd estimate this combination to be 630 ft/lbs torque @ 4600, and 630 HP @ 5500 rpm. I've done many 540 engines but better heads and 9.2 compression, I use 240/248 @ .050 w/ 114 LSA and .680 lift. They make 680 ft/lbs torque @ 4800, and 675 HP @ 5800. Again, if your going to spend the money anyway, call Bob.

Not going to dyno this winter......heads are at the shop right now and can pull cams out but that's as far as I'm going this year

I have my own guy who does some cup car stuff. I will listen to madera and let him grind me a cam but other than that I want my guy to do the work. He has talked to eickert and built some of his motors. He told me he isn't in the marine business so if somebody who builds boat motors for a living tells him how to do it he is all ears
